From my experience with all 3 types of fire fish, they only jump out of the tank when they are stressed or harassed by other tank mate; they often stay in the middle water column and don't swim around much (need momentum to jump over the fence
). They are very shy so bigger fish scare them easily and they never seem to "get used to" the bigger fish. Midas or the blennies don't get along with them and often harassed by these. They don't like the blue neon gobies or tail spot blennies but they can pick on these

I have an open top also but cover at night but decided not to get a pair due to the risk of loosing them to jumping out of the tank. My wife has one in the 30 gallon that is covered all day and he jumped during a water change. Got him back in the tank in time but I would hate to loose one.
