Hello everyone, I'm pretty new here and find this website very informative, thanks for having me! So i had saltwater, freshwater and reef tanks for over 10 years but about 7 years ago I moved across country and gave it all up. About a year ago I started this little tank to hold me over for a while as I'm in the process of buying a house.

So this is my 36 gallon bow front, I have about 35 pounds of live rock, 20 pounds of sand. I'm running a AI prime HD on the display, and some China LEDs on the sump, (which I just built about a month ago) it's a 10 gallon glass aquarium that has 2 chambers on the left with sponges and filter floss in one and ceramic tubes in the other. Then a large area as a fuge. The return pump is a mag drive 700. I'm running a reef octopus 100 HOB off the sump and a two little fishes GFO reactor with HC GFO.

Live stock
1- small yellow tang
2- false perculas
1- 4 stripe damsel
1- red fire fish

I just started buying some frags a month or so ago, I have a green trumpet, turquoise trumpet, a blue acan, some GSP, pulsing xenia and a purple tip hammer.

Once I get a house, ill be building a 210 gallon from the ground up into a wall. I'll be happy to post a build thread on that when I get it going! Thanks again and have a good day and merry Christmas.

Pretty neat setup I used to have a 36 bowfront when I did freshwater and loved it. Just food for thought before the tang police chime in. Do you have any plans on re-homing him eventually? He'll get way to big for that tank. Also keep a close eye on those green star polyps, they grow like a weed and can quickly take over a tank. I just got done battling them in my tank. Had to take the rock out and completely remove it as it was choking out some of my more expensive acropora. But again good looking setup and I look forward to following your progress

Thanks! Yes I'm aware that this tank is to small for the tang, I bought the smallest one I could find he's less then 2 inches right now, I think within 4 months hee should be in a bigger system. And the GSP I just got them about a week ago and put them on that monti skeleton so I should be able to isolate that to keep em in check. Thanks for the input, I've been outta the hobby so long it's crazy how much it's changed but the basics are still there.

Lol no problem. I did the same thing. I had a yellow tang for a little while before re-homing him to a friend with a 300 gallon tank. So I still get to visit him from time to time

So it's been a couple years since I got back into saltwater, and a couple years since I made this thread. So I wanted to update it so my thousands of followers aren't in limbo.

Some updates: I moved last year and when I moved the tank I built a new stand (super exciting) I made it with locally sourced beetle kill pine. My son liked it so much he decided to draw on it with his crayons, priceless...

I gave the yellow tang to my LFS because I knew keeping one in such a small tank was not fair for the fish.. then i bought a flame angle because it's my favorite fish ever, he quickly started eating my coral so i gave him back to the LFS, also because he needed a bigger tank. I have now learned my lesson and only keep appropriate fish for my size tank.

I currently have,

1 royal gramma
1 purple fire fish
1 yellow watchman goby
1 pistol shrimp
1 cleaner shrimp
2 scarlet hermit crabs
1 Mexican turbo

I want to add one more fish that's a active swimmer so any suggestions are welcome.

I have to say the YWG and pistol shrimp have one of the coolest symbiotic relationships I've seen in a aquarium.

I made a new sump, I found a 15 gallon tank at Petco, I didn't know they existed but it fit perfect under my stand. I have a 4" filter sock that feeds into a relativity large refugium. Then into the return chamber, run by a mag drive 7.

Im still working on cord management, or I'm just lazy I dunno.


I bought a icecap 1k a while back and love it, for the price I think the gyres are great.

Anyways I will share some pics of my set up, and thanks for reading.

I had a lot of struggles like most people and eventually was able to start getting some satisfactory coral growth. I use to years ago have zero trouble with my reef and put in no effort, when I rebooted and tried again I thought I was doing everything right but continued to fail. Eventually being repetitive and consistent I got on the right path, and hope to continue to grow in this hobby.

Thank you @DSC reef. I struggled for a long time to keep simple corals alive and had no idea why. I was doing everything by the book and just wasn't getting results. But about 5 months ago things started growing so im very happy about that. Im looking forward to having success again in reefing. Thanks for taking a look.
