I'm looking for suggestions for a canister filter and circulation pumps for a 36 gallon bow front tank (31x21x15). My plan is to use sand and dry rock and do a fishless cycle then start adding some beginner friendly soft corals and a few clown fish and maybe some CUC? I just don't understand what is not enough or too strong.

FYI: No sump suggestions please. I don't have room for that so I need to either go canister or HOB but I'd prefer something on the quiet side. Thanks!

First, forget the canister filter - these aren't ideal and are going to be high maintenance. What you probably want instead is a HOB system - something like the SeaChem Tidal 35. This will be somewhat quiet, with the caveat that it will be louder than a traditional overflow/sump setup with the water flow into the tank from the Tidal.

Thanks but I don’t mind some maintenance as I’m retired and have all the time in the world and I also prefer less noise. I understand that canister filters require cleaning often. I’m good with it.

Whenever I look for machines for my tank, I always go with machines that handle double my tank size . Manufacturers always exaggerate how strong their machine is.

You won't need the canister filter in a reef tank. It's so much of a detritus trap and so much maintenance that I would never use one outside of minor scrubbing periods (12h-3d max at a time, maybe once a month) with carbon and filter floss.

You don't need a sump, and you don't "need" a protein skimmer, though I would definitely add a good HOB skimmer or in-tank skimmer

For circulation on a tank that size, I would run 3x Hydor Koralia 3G (if you have a lot of rock). I would use 2 if you have an open aquascape. If you look at my profile pic, that is probably just 3 AC Koralias and no issue keeping SPS. It's kind of sad to see that they seem to be basically harder to find. I would get Koralias over no-name DC pumps. LPS coral doesn't like high flow, but I strongly believe your bacterial colonies within your rocks loves it, so you have to be judicious about coral placement.

Again, you can run a small reef happily with just water changes, live rock (cycled dry rock is live rock minus algae/inverts), and flow (that's what I do with my QT). The canister is a distraction IMO. I would much rather throw on an Aquamaxx or Reef Octopus HOB skimmer than a canister filter. That said, I would find a way to run a skimmate collector with my HOB skimmer to avoid reaching around the tank to empty the cup so much. I ran an HOB skimmer 10+ years ago, a Prizm from Red Sea, then a Prizm Pro from Red Sea (much better). I've run a Tunze in-tank nano-skimmer as well - that was never a favorite of mine. In my system, it was probably more helpful for gas exchange more than anything else. It was their smallest model, but it was a very small 30mm cube tank.

I've been through this for a long time, from being a newbie who tried to start a reef with limestone rocks and a bio-wheel HOB filter (like I used to use for Cichlids when I was younger) about 16 years ago, to having a fully automated euro-style 525 liter dream tank today, and many in-between.

I appreciate the detailed reply and suggestion but I have zero interest in running a no filter tank at this point.

I know there are more ways to do this than one and everyone has their method that works but I really want to run a system that has mechanical filtration and is as quiet as possible.
Where are my canister filter users?

Fluval 307 for a canister is as quiet as can be for this type of filter and easier to maintain than most.

If you want less noise and a lot easier to clean, the Tunze Comline series filter would be even better. They are great internal filters, very sleek and virtually invisible in the tank.

I have the Tunze Comline 3168 in my 75 gallons and the tank is right in front of me in m living room, it’s quieter than any canister I’ve had, and I am very picky about noise and have done tons of research on the subject.

For circulation pumps, Koralias are good pumps, and silent. If you want pumps that you can program and customize via an app on your tablet or phone, then go with AI Nero 3. Any of those won’t add noise to your setup.

Thanks! Do you think the 3168 would be okay for a 36 gallon? Should I run an HOB skimmer with it and also, do you have the ATO unit that works with the 3168?

For a 36 gallons, I would go with one of the the smaller versions of the 3168 (there are 2 other models). It should be enough and there is even space in it’s casing to insert your heater.

I did buy the ATO and also the skimmer. They sell it as «Tunze Reefpack 500» in Europe and it comes with filter, ATO, skimmer and bucket for the ATO. Since it’s not sold here, I bought all three components separately and got a bucket at a home depot type store.

They also have the Reefpack 250, so you might want to check into this one instead (and buy items separately like I did). It should be enough and will cost less for the same quality.

You won’t find much infos online about it, but Tunze’s USA customer service will quickly respond to your questions by email.

While canisters are called nitrate factories due to quick buildup of waste- bi weekly maintenance will make use of canister manageable.
Hang on version is however ideal, easier for maintenace/service and clear so you can see within housing. CPR backpack and reef octopus are examples of nice compact uinits.
As for skimmer- IceCap K-2-50 or 100 will be ideal, compact yet works like a full size unit.
Icecap just came out with a NEO model for even smaller tanks.

Mind if I ask about what lights you run as well or suggestions? I've been thinking of the Viparspectra 165W. My tank is 31" wide and 21" deep. I really appreciate your answers. I'm definitely leaning towards what you are suggesting.

Yeah, I feel like a consistent maintenance and cleaning schedule makes a canister okay. As I've mentioned I'm retired so I have plenty of time to devote to maintaining my tank, just still trying to wrap my head around all the information. It's all a little overwhelming sometimes for a noob like me.

I decided to go with AI Prime 16 HD for lights, as they can grow with you if you upgrade your tank, and they can grow softies, LPS and SPS depending on how many you use.

I started with the EVO 13.5 gallons and had only one. Then I converted my 75 gallons to saltwater and bought a second one. When/if I buy SPS, I’ll add 2 more AI Prime 16 HD. They are fully programmable on your phone or tablet and the app is nice and easy to use, once you’ve figured it out (not hard). BRS on Youtube has made really awesome videos about them and you’ll find all the info you need (how many, how to space them, what height, etc.)

There are also facebook groups about them where people share their tank settings and you can import them or share yours. But it’s really easy to make your own. I love that you can easily simulate sunrise and sunset, I think it‘s better for your fish and corals.

Which skimmer do you use with your setup?

Tunze Comline doc skimmer 9012, the one that’s part of the Reefpack 500.

I’ve bought it but it’s not being used right now as my tank just finished cycling and is not dirty enough to need it.

Hi! Check this review here. There are 2 filters suitable to 36 gal. tank for less than $100.
I purchased the AquaClear A610/50 for my 30 gal. tank. Quite happy with it.
For you, I'd personally recommend MarineLand Penguin Bio, because of the flow rate and three filtration stages
