I know absolutely nothing about this, but my daughter's boyfriend is a 3D wiz, I would like to have him print some things for me but I don't the difference between resin and plastic, and or what is reef safe. Can someone point me in the right direction? I just want a pump holder for Tunze ATO.

PETG is probably the material you want, which would be FDM (non-resin) process. Resin parts can be reef safe, I don't know if the majority are and they would have to be comprehensively cured and washed, but PET is a plastic used in food containers and unless it has substantial additives, I've never had a problem using it in my tank.

I agree with above recommendations for PETG in an FDM printer. I've had great success with this material in my tanks.

Resin printers are more for making things with a nice appearance (finer resolution), but not as strong for functional printing. I don't know how well resin holds up in saltwater applications, either.

do PLA or ABS work
I think PLA works, but it may break down over time. I would not consider it the most recommendable material.
ABS is a good option. Similar to PET, it was designed for making food containers and is non-reactive with all materials it may come in contact with in a reefing application. The main reason I would still recommend PETG instead of ABS is that it tends to print a bit better at finer resolutions.
