A buddy with a 3D printer is printing a few things for me, so we decided to try out a few RFGs in PLA for my 180 gallon freshwater I'm getting ready to set up- mainly to test if they fit and function before long term ones in ABS or PETG.

I don't have any details on his print setup, but can ask.

I would consider tpu. The new flex version from Vca is flexible and has been more long lived for me than the petg original. They tend to split at the line loc and not hold their position after being removed for cleaning a few times. The flex version has been great, plus coralline just crumbles off when you squish it which makes cleaning super easy.

I've printed them in TPU, depending on the printer it can be a pain. But one think is to turn on combing. Keep the nozzle from crossing the parameter to keep a cleaner print.

@stoney7713 mentioned turning on combing. Some people have a hard time printing tpu and I don’t know if it’s purely settings/slicing or that some printers are finicky, or the filament. I’m no help with that being relatively new to printing myself. I do use a dryer when printing with tpu, but that just because I don’t use that filament very often and I’d rather be safe. With severe vision limitations I’ve been able to print in all kinds of materials on a Bambu p1s without much ado. I have two issues that bite me every now and then. Not aligning to z, for some reason a few things I’ve downloaded to print didn’t slice to z and, well…made a huge mess from printing in thin air. I try to always align to z, but my memory sucks so I do forget sometimes. The other is wiping the nozzle with a microfiber towel after purging (before bed leveling). I can skip that and not have a problem, but every time I’ve had stringing or adhesion problems I hadn’t wiped the nozzle down after purging.

TPU was not easy to print on my Ender. Some people have better experiences than others. The brand of filament, temperature, retract, speed.

I just got a P1S and have not tried printing TPU on it yet. I'm hoping for a better experience. So far post clean up has been nearly none existing on the P1S.

Also TPU clogs your nozzle, it's a pain to clean out after use and gums up the other filaments.

Still with all it's problems, it's a neat filament and has its uses.

Heck, you packaged the pump better than I did sending it to you. A++ guy right here everybody. Well A+++, you get the extra plus for the speed. Most times in life you have to choose between speed and quality, not with you good sir!

No worries, I looked at that as low hanging fruit. Something that could easily be knocked out.

It's designing and 3d printing a tons of pieces to an AWC is the tough one.

I wanted a better way to bring frags to and from swaps safely. This frag pod is designed to use flexible filament on the bottom, and then swap to PETG/PLA for the top layers. The flexible layer holds the frags securely, even upside down.

Very nicely done!

One thing to note is the bonding properties between TPU (flexible) and other plastics.

TPU bonds well to PETG, but will not bond to PLA.

I'd imagine you used PETG/TPU with your print(s). I'd be surprised if the bond between PLA/TPU could even hold together when sliding the frag plug in place.

Now I'll have to research tpu. My printer has the settings for it (like for warm up) but I didn't realize it was a cool flexible type.....
 
Anyone have a good nori feeder? I printed one that worked ok but was thinking maybe we could design a better model.
Give me a few minutes to a few hours I am almost there in my folder doing a couple things at a time. Hopefully we can get an updated master list, I used to come here allllllll the time and see the same stuff that mostly I had already seen on thingiverse :(

i will circle back with directions but can build a 50x70, 100x70, 5x7 plate, 7x7 plate, 1/2" options and 3/4" options (im not 100% sure on the 7x7 but if you put two N52 magnets 60x10x5 on the top and bottom and scale the outside magnet piece out so theres something ridiculous like 5-6 magnets stacked im sure it'll hold on 3/4" because I am literally right there with 2 on the inside 1 on the outside i just havent had time to do 2/2 or 2/3 2/4, etc

I am getting ready to put this in a box, finally, I have had a fun time with printing two that had holes in them. Too high of retraction settings carried over from previous print is an easy way to fart your time away. You can print 2 of these from 1 spool of plastic, I use 4 walls, 20% Gyroid infill. They leak from the bottom, but that still filters your water for what your trying to accomplish right ?. Pour resin if you want the bottom outside of your tank. Screw needs to be printed 95% x/y. Works awesome
