Very cool - and very well thought out.

When you go to reprint the parts that warped, try painters tape - we have found that, for PETG, there really is nothing more effective when it comes to the large flat parts than tape. there are few brands that work better then others, but if you have a Frys Electronics nearby - the blue painters tape they sell in big sheets, seems to work pretty well.

A heated bed plus printing a raft will also help reduce warping. I regularly use the blue painter's tape with my printers, but the next printer will have a heated bed (and dual extruders to print with water-disolvable support material!

My concern would be chemicals leeching from the 3D printing material.

Printing with ABS filament would be trivial. There's ABS in many tanks - bulkheads, eggcrate, etc. There are dozens of different filament materials to choose from. Just choose one that's known-stable in saltwater. Heck, PLA with 33% carbon fiber would be a great filament material to use. Strong, stable, doesn't warp, and doesn't leach. .. aw dang. Now I've got all sorts of ideas for tank stuff running around in my head. :)

Would Nylon with chopped carbon fiber be an OK material in the reef tank. I know for a fact its not Food safe

Nice! I will be even cooler when they have clear materials to work with....... How about print your own power head or pump? It will happen sooner than you think, they are already doing circuit boards.

That's awesome mate! A 3D printed skimmer is on my to-do list eventually :)

There is so many awesome things you can 3D print for your reef. If you are into DIY for your reef you should also check out Reef-Pi by Ranjib on here, it's a DIY reef tank controller. I'm slowly making progress on my build - including a 3D printed housing!

I've also printed a protein skimmer neck cleaner, a nitrate reactor, a feeding ring, float switch holders etc. so many possibilities!

Nice job! I have wondered about doing this myself :) My plastic of choice for my tanks is PETG for sure and a raft would help a lot with the warping. Also, slowing down the print could help too (lol, but slowing down a 2 day print seems crazy).

If you haven't already, please vote on my poll, we are aiming for @revhtree to give us our own 3D printing forum:
https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/get-any-part-you-need-right-here.321961/

Also, if you have your parts up on Thingiverse, let me know and I'll add them into our unofficial R2R collection!

I love that poll. No matter what option you choose, it doesn't really matter. Because they are all different ways of saying "Rev we want a 3D printing sub-forum!" :p

What motor did you use for your skinner cleaner? I am thinking of doing the same thing

Thanks guys for all the support! I saw a few questions so I’ll try to answer them. It’s PETG plastic and the plastic safety sheet provided by the company said the dyes are safe and won’t leach. I can’t believe how many people are all here printing stuff!
