I have a portable 4 stage r/o setup that has two discharges im I aloud to valve off the drinking quality discharge or does it need to run

Not sure of your actual question, but RO units that are made for drinking water typically have a “polishing” carbon filter after the membrane. They also typically have two “exit” lines like you’re explaining. For fish water, you don’t really need that extra polishing carbon filter. However, hopefully you have a DI filter after the RO unit to clean up that last bit of dissolved solids. Hope this made sense.

it is ro di I wanted to set up the unit to fill tank but don't know what to do with the waste water I have no were to drain it

Oh, I took the “two discharges” as two “clean” water lines.

Yes, An RO/DI unit has a waste line and a clean water line. With my unit, for every one gallon of clean water, I generate about three gallons of waste water. You have to be able to run the waste line somewhere. Home Depot sells ¼ inch tubing in 25 foot lengths. You must be able to reach a sink of window or something within 25 feet.

What system do you have? Is it RO or RO/DI? Does it have separate RO and DI treated water lines as well as the tap water in and waste lines? If you are speaking about the waste then no you cannot shut it off, all membranes must be flushed continously when in use and this is the reason for the flow restrictor and the 3:1 to 4:1 waste to good ratio.

Make sure you have the flow restrictor in the waste line when you extend it and if you are extending a long distance or uphill you maye need to change the retsrictor to keep the waste ratio in the manufacturers recommended range of 3:1 to 4:1.
