I am setting up a 40B tank. I am having trouble choosing between a maxspect r420r 160w 16k fixture vs two AI primes with mounts. I want to be able to grow mostly softies and LPS but want a few SPS as well and don't want to be limited if i chose to do more. Any advice? Thanks for your help

I am currently setting up a 50G that has almost the same dimensions, its 36x18x18 just 2" taller and I will be using 2 AI Primes. The reason I'm using the AI Primes is because I run them on my nano tanks and with the new software updates and the look I can achieve with these light is by far superior IMO. As far as growing sps there will be no problem, I keep acros and clams both with my primes, and with 2 over a 40B with only 16" of depth you will have no problems.

I run a 160w razor over my 50 breeder.

Nice, but the corners are a bit dark. I think I'd get the next-longer model if I were to do it again.

I have not used the primes, but you have even fewer sets of emitters there so I suspect it would have the same issues.

Depends on what you are used to, this may or may not bother you.

FWIW, I'm not selling my razor or anything, but I think I do prefer the coverage of my DIY fixture better. If I were going to look at another commercial fixture, it would be the orbit marine pro or something similar to it. Better spread.
