So I'm new to this forum, and to saltwater/ reef tanks in general. Long story short, I've had quite a few freshwater tanks in the past, just bought a house and have the room to finally set up the tank that I've wanted for years. I've done a decent amount of research, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to run my plans by people that actually know what they're talking about, and find out if I'm being an idiot or not.

The plan is essentially a 40 gallon breeder that will start as a FOWLR system until I feel confident enough to start adding in corals. I'd like to set it up to add corals without needing to make drastic changes to my set up. As of today, I bought the 40 gallon tank, and a 20L tank that will act as a sump (Petco $ per gallon sale and 40's were 50% off). The budget is a decent concern of mine, the main thing is saving money where I can, but not buying something terrible that I'll need to replace.

The sump is going to be DIY with 3 chambers. The first will be big enough for an in-sump reef octopus skimmer, but I'm going to hold off getting that until it becomes apparent I need it. The second chamber is going to be a refugium with rock rubble and chaeto, lighted with a simple LED made for plants, so primarily blue and red spectrum. I know fuges aren't viewed as incredible nitrate/ phosphate removers, but I think relative to the size of the tank, it should play a big part, as well as supply pods. Third chamber will be the return pump and heater. Somewhere in there I'll be running a media bag with carbon (adding reactor potentially later on).

With that in mind the rest of the equipment I'm currently looking at (with recommendations/ reviews welcome) is:

Light-
Current USA Orbit Marine LED Saltwater Reef Lighting System (36"-48")(Seems to be a good option for LED at a great price with good reviews, just haven't seen much talk in any forum about it)

Powerheads-
Hydor Koralia Nano- probably 2 of the 240's

Heater-
Eheim Jager

Return Pump-
Quite One PRO 12oo (only 317 gph, so do I need more?)
Thinking of adding Hydor Flow Rotating Deflector to the return as well

Plumbing-
Tank will be drilled, herbie overflow with gate valve to tune the primary overflow

Stand-
DIY probably 2x4 frame with hardwood plywood/ trim with removable panels for easy access to the sump

The rest is probably API test kits for most parameters, thinking courser sand and definitely dry rock. Stocking will most likely be clown pair, 1-3 firefish, 3 chromis and misc inverts. Feel free to let me know what you think of the plan, anything I should add or remove or just change up. Thanks for any help.

That all sounds good to me. If it were me I would up the return pump to somewere in the 500gph for more of a turn over rate. If you plan on adding coral down the road make sure that led will support what you want to put in. I haven't heard much about the marine led. But good luck with the build.

I believe the 40 breeders sold by Petco cannot be drilled.

Yes they can there are thousands of build threads on here with breeders being drilled.
From what I've been reading, the only potential is that the bottom is tempered, though according to Aqueon it isn't, but the sides should definitely not be tempered, which is what I'm planning on drilling anyways. I'll do a bit more research to double check, and keep the receipt just in case.

I love 40 breeders, I have one that's not drilled though. As far as lighting goes, you may find them a bit limiting. I know people using them, there was an lfs here pushing them really hard a while back, and everyone I talked to upgraded them with they started getting more experienced with corals. I have the blue and white version on a fowlr. Those lights are good for softies and zoas and such, I believe each led is like .5w with doesn't give great penetration.
If you're on a budget, check out the jebao powerheads, they are controllable which is nice and has a much smaller footprint than the hydors.
Are you cutting your own baffles for the sump, if not here's a good inexpensive kit that I've used for other builds: http://www.ebay.com/itm/REFUGIUM-KI...276338?hash=item25c1dd00f2:g:ex4AAOSw5cNYZXOZ
Here's my 40 breeder; I have an ato and temperature controller as a bonus. The stand is the metal frame of a utility bench from home depot, it is the perfect size.
Post some pics when you get it going.

the orbit marine is a good light it is what i used on my first tank but to be honest i should have went with the orbit marine pro at first. It may cost a bit more but it would worth it in the end. They are great lights for the price and kind of hard to change settings yourself but if you call Current they will walk you through it. The manual makes it seems like a pain to set up but they walked me through it in 5 mins.

Sounds like my original build plans. I "bean" drilled my 40 breeder from petco, I have a reef octopus and the Current Marine led. Ive read and agree with above poster about the lights being somewhat limited. You might look into the black box leds.

I kind of got the feeling that the price was too good for it to be a high end light. Is there something wrong with it other than it just being underpowered for some corals? If it just lacks power, I have no problem buying another one once I need it and running two, or adding some other type of lighting in addition to it. Mainly I'm trying to get away from spending a huge sum of money on just one fixture, I'd rather get one and add another or supplement it with something else.

You're preaching to the choir... sounds like we're in the same boat. Notice my screen name, it's not Daddy's Pride & Joy,lol. Life gets in the way of nice things sometimes. You're trying to squeak by, but reasonably. I get it. I'm not up and running yet. But if you do some reading lots of posts out there about them being under power and the clincher, a few of them on the for sale boards too. The Chineseium black boxes seems the best bang for the buck.

Yeah, just trying to find that line of not paying too much, but not wasting money on crap you have to replace. Seeing some of the tanks with insanely expensive lights that need to be run at 30-50% power just to not kill the corals seems like starting small and adding on when needed might be the best plan. I'll check out those black boxes as well.

Not much more if any money. The only downside is to cover tank "entirely" you should have 2. Sides maybe a little dim. So my thoughts, better to have dim sides than an entirely dim tank. If it were my money and if i were to do it again from my readings.... are one VIPARSPECTRA Timer Control 165W LED Aquarium Light as listed on amazon. Just under 150. Just had a thought, I'm not a super huge fan of having light spill out over the top of the tank. I'd like a canopy but would need to get the height ratio appropriate to the tank height.
I went with the Mag 5 pump, btw. Its been a hobby favorite for yrs. I'm planning on building an ATS also.

I just put water in a 40 breeder of my own and drilled it no problem so your good there. I would certainly up the return pump especially if your are splitting it. Only thing i dont know how the herbie drains really work but i have a glass-holes overflow and my return pump is to strong for it causing a "waterfall" in the drain plumbing so i have it tempered way down via a ball valve on the return plumbing so that is something to look into. The powerheads may be a little small i accidentally bought a nano power head and it was about the size of a golfball and i just wasnt comfortable keeping it so i grabbed a hydor 850 seems to be doing ok for now along with my return. I plan to pick up the viparspecta timer light like @Family Tank mentioned when it comes time for light when i get it in place i can put a pic up so you can see how the coverage is n such. When i started my build back in January i scoured the website for 40 breeder builds looking for ideas this forum will help you a ton if you run into any issues or problems along the way. Good Luck!

Checking through the forums what really what set me to a 40 breeder, and getting to see how many other people have set theirs up and the amount of success has been pretty helpful even in just the planning phase.

So for the light, I think I'm going to listen to absolutely no ones advice and try out something completely different. Since I know I'm only starting with FOWLR system, and I'm while I'm really pretty sure I'll enjoy it and want to move onto corals after a few months I could also just decide saltwater isn't for me and completely bail, or I could decide I just want the fish and don't need corals. So rather than buy a cheaper light (which would still be approx $180 at the least) that may or may not function for a reef, I think for the FOWLR I'm just going to make some pretty cheap light, either a couple of small LED spotlights in a simple fixture, or some LED strip, and spend probably around $35 bucks. If I decide later I like it and want to move to corals, I'll go get a much better light and just use the fixture somewhere else in my house. Also helps with not dropping a ton of money up front, get to spread out spending more.

Feel free to tell me if you think this is dumb.

Just be careful of the color temp of the bulbs. I definitely recommend just blue and white on the leds, and any whites need to be 10000k or higher. Any full spectrum leds or whites in a lower temp range, a common par30 led spot is like 6000k you with get massive algae issues especially on a fowlr. If you went to spend about $100, these will even grow corals: https://www.21ledusa.com/aquarium_led_reefbar_pro_36_5050_p/rbp505036.htm

They can if they're Aqueon. I drilled my Petco 40g breeder without a problem in the back. You can't drill the bottom but the sides are fine.
