I guess you could say I am confused. I thought that the water going into the sump from the tank would come down on the right side, but a friend told me that was not the case. So where should my return pump be located and where should the sump be filling up from? Where would be the best place to put the skimmer as well? Forgot to mention this will be hooked up to two tanks, so will need room for 2 return pumps. If the return pumps do go on the right side, I think the final baffle is pretty high, with it being so high do I have enough room to handle the water volume that would come down if I lost power, there will be (2) 33 gallon tanks hooked up to this sump.

So on the left hand side, where the big hole is, is where your intake should be. The hole is to fit a filter sock from what it looks like. Then the second chamber would be where you would house your skimmer, the next chamber would be for either your refugium, or reactors, or any other equipment. Then the final chamber on the right would be where your return pump would go. The only thing that's throwing me off is the last baffle is taller then the rest.

IMO that last chamber on the right would be for growing Cheato or the like with a split off your overflow or return line. The Return pump would go in the second last chamber.

Yea, do you think if I cut down the size of that baffle the design would be better or using that section for macro algae would be more useful, I had not actually planned on putting a light above it, so macro might not be a good idea.

Correct, if you're not planning to use the refugium you could.

If you don't plan to use that last section for MAcro there is no need for it really. I would Just cut the baffle right out.

Not to hijack the thread, but would having a refugium beyond the return pump have as much benefit for macro algae absorbing nitrates? It seems like most of the water would never go through the refugium. I imagine it would be safer for pods though. I’m designing a 100g sump tomorrow, so I’m suddenly rethinking my original ideas.

If you have it set up the way that @Finhead described above, yes :)

Yes, you can divert more or less flow as you see fit with that design. You can split your return as well as your overflow to that area if you want more flow.

This is right. The diagram show in another thread is not wrong but it is not optimal and I think does not have a skimmer in the picture. So, removing the last baffle, with a great skimmer may produce some micro bubbles and I believe the purpose of the section. The next is for a Fuge (can be plummed the same as diagram) and will house all your macro, pod population in a safe (refugium) from harm. The last is for Return. So.MCJones is correct.
