Hey Everyone!

I am setting up my first saltwater tank, a 40 gallon breeder with a Fiji Cube AIO. The AIO has 3 compartments. It comes with a media basket with 3 shelves, a middle compartment and a 3rd compartment for the return pump. I'm curious as to what to put in the media section. I've been reading and it seems filter floss is pretty popular to use on top. I've read some people use carbon and some use chemi-pure and others use just filter floss and bio balls for bacteria. Any suggestions? I greatly appreciate any help

First off your going to get a lot of answers as what to use. Chemi-pur is Activated carbon mixed with Ion Exchange resin I believe. So if your using this you won't need separate Carbon. Filter floss is great as a mechanical filter. It removes small particles before they have a chance to break down. The key with this is to change the filter floss out often. Bio balls are a thing of the past, there is many more efficient biofilter media out there. Whether you need it or not is a different question, if you have an abundant amount of live rock you would not need this.

I know I did not give you any specifics, but it really depends on what YOU want your filter todo, and what you are attempting to keep. Are you going to use a skimmer in the middle compartment?

I plan on keeping MAYBE 5 fish, a cleaner crew and eventually some easy beginner corals. I also plan on using live rock...…

My plan was to get a skimmer for the middle compartment. I originally was thinking a small refugium but I was told a refugium in an AIO would be too small for any benefit...…
