Looking to see if a 40 gallon breeder setup requires drilling in/sump/ skimmer etc.

Was looking at upgrading. Also have a local with 65 gallon and stand reef ready (but needs pump/skimmer)

No, a 40 gallon breeder does not require drilling, and it would benefit from a skimmer. You can be very successful without the use of a sump. The sump's main purpose is to add displacement, and allow the user to relocate equipment from the display into a basement per-se. A skimmer is not dependent on a sump and can also hang on the back.

If you're upgrading, it sounds like you already have your foot in the door for a setup with a sump no?

Actually no. Was watching BRS and he set up a 40 breeder w/o a sump setup but I didn’t see what they used for filtration

In the 5 minute aquarium guide (guessing those are the videos you're talking about?) they state that they run carbon in an ahem hob filter and that they use a Tunze (I think that was the brand) skimmer that sits in the tank.

Must have missed it if they said it and couldn’t find that episode.

Really just trying to plot my setup. I can get a 40 gallon breeder w stand from local getting out of hobby for $125 which isn’t bad. Just wanted to see what all I would need for it and which route to go.

I would highly recommend a sump.. you can find them cheap if you watch for sales or just DIY one out of a old tank.

I found this one for my 40 breeder for $138.. brand new, delivered.

Also there is no need to drill a tank, just use a HOB overflow.. cheap, easy and effective.

found this eshopps Pf-300 on sale for under $50..

Ahhh. So my HOB overflow can filter down the the sump underneath? Very nice.
Yeah I’m on the fence and this seems like a doable option. I just didn’t want to have to construct/cut my own plumbing. We’ll see if I can get the tank first then I’ll start the setup.

I never really do much plumbing on my tanks, couple pieces of flex hose and a few minutes later I'm done. Reefing is only as complicated as you want to make it ;)

$20 dollars and 20 minute installation.. easy, cheap and effective.

sorry I didn't answer your question, yes if you have a "overflow" (not to be confused with HOB filter) you can use that to direct water from tank down to your sump and your return pump will send water back up to tank.

No worries man. Just trying to do it right so looking at all options. Tank is in the house for $100

What’s size is that sump above?

so the overflow brings water down and I’d imagine I’ll need a pump in the sump to get the water back up

Wow.. what a deal! Great looking tank, be sure to start a build thread for it.

The dimensions of this upon measuring lead me to believe it’s a 45 gallon tank.
36x12x24 matches dimensions of 45...I’m guessing I can still follow the setups of a 40 gallon breeder?

Space within the stand is 31x9x26 with doors closed...going to be tough fit for sump

Actually this would fit as the back of stand is open 18.5 inches long and that brings the width to a bit over 10 inches....not $138 bucks tho lolz

That's a 45, same set up procedures as a 40.

The large flex hose came with my sump. The black hose and over the top return was purchased from doctors foster and smith but they are out of business now, you should be able to find that stuff at any of the online reef supply shops.
