40 gallon breeder filtration

Hi
In my new 40 gallon breeder I’m gonna run a 800 litre an hour HOB that has 5w uv in it could this be used as just mechanical filtration
My main question is could I run a canister filter just full of biological media or would this still create a nitrate trap and lead to troubles keeping nitrates down?

Are you also planning on having a HOB skimmer? You would be much better off using an HOB refugium vs. the canister. After you install, you would want to seed it with copepods & consider dosing phyto until the system is established.

i was thinking of a normal hob with built in uv. Then i hang one back protein skimmer after that a hang on back refugium if that would work i really like the look of equipment on tank for some reason so the amount of units wont bother me lol

I was very interested also in small UVs. But if you watch the Bulk reef supply video on UVs, they say that Uvs are basically useless at small sizes. The ones that really work are bigger than your arm.
