40 gallon breeder reef tank

I’m about set up my first saltwater tank after a ton of research and still feeling very overwhelmed with the price and everything that needs to happen. I’m seeing a bunch of conflicting information about canister filters and was planning this route to start out (just to save money). I have an Aquatop CF400UV. My local saltwater store recommended it, but after reading some of the forums, will I fail with a canister? Willing to upgrade to a sump and a larger system when I get the hang of it and the budget allows, but don’t want to waste a bunch of money on a failed system either.

take this time to continue doing research. you will benefit from being over prepared compared to under prepared.
