have you looking into an inline heater. it plumbs into your return line. mine is a hydor and i like it.

I have one too and it's awesome. Every time you turn off the return pump the line drains and when there is no water in the heater, it automatically shuts off.

Contrary to what most people believe, bioballs aren't nitrate factories but they do trap crud. If you fill that section of your sump with liverock instead, it would add to natural filtration.

I have since added 2 small heaters into my sump that seem to be working pretty well.

I have thought about adding liverock by the amount I would have to add would cost $. Right now id rather spend money on other things for my tank. I also just added a hob aqua clear mod'd refugium to clear up any future nitrate issue of the bio-balls.
