I have a 40 gallon breeder currently stocked with 1 clownfish and 1 blue green chromis
i have 2 800 gph powerheads but it seems the flow seems to be too strong for the fish and they are hiding behind the heater, I decided to unplug one of the powerheads during the day but leave them both on at night does this effect the fish? Should I look into getting 1 stronger powerhead?

Yes, your fish are having to run the maelstrom... In a 40-gallon tank you want 400-800 Gph (max) combined. You're easily running 2-4x the recommended amount.
