Hello everyone, quick background, I have a 40 gallon breeder with a zebra eel in it, it cycled for about a month before the transfer; eel has been in for about 3 weeks since. The water peramiters are all good except a slightly elevated nitrite, light color prolly between 0ppm and 0.25ppm. My concern is the floating things in my water. I rinsed off my filters a tad bit in case they were clogged but it looks like a mix of microscopic bubbles and dust or microbes just floating everywhere. On the top of the water is a layer of dust it looks like too but I have a top?. Not sure what to do with all that floating crap, none of my other tanks had this problem in the past, pics are trash but there hard to catch on a camera phone.

Also I’ve noticed since putting him in, he’s opening his mouth really wide For a few moments then not, on and off... I’m assuming it’s him breathing but I Wanna rule out that floating stuff since it’s literally everywhere

Dissolved Organic Compounds or DOC on the surface this is common when you bio load peeks up. I have it often on my tank because I can't surface skim. Surface skimming solves this but it looks like you won't be able to do that. The water cloudiness is probably the same.

One other thing the piece of pipe that the eel is hanging out in might leech stuff into the water. I am not sure but I would trust that in the tank.

Hmmm very interesting, I thought of that too when I put it in there, maybe I should put something else in there for him, as for the DOC, will the surface skimming take care of the cloudiness too?

Time as the tank needs to build it's biodiversity.

I know people think it is just a predator tank, but a skimmer can help with gas exchange and nutrient export. Make sure to keep up on your water changes. Eventually balance will be achieved and your water will be crystal clear.

Can’t help but to love this hobby sometimes❤️Till I need to buy something else for it, you really think that pipe could be leeching something into the tank?, it’s made of a tile like substance that I broke off to size

I can't say for sure, but I wouldn't use it. It doesn't feel right and I trust my intuition a lot having had a ton of time to program it. :)

As to buying stuff, it was just a suggestion. Who knows maybe pulling the pipe will do it, maybe not. I start with the cheapest solutions first, it keeps me financially sane.

I feel you Haha, I’ll look into a better alternative then that, who knows, maybe it will clear it up, thank you for everything. I tell you what though I’ve lost some pretty amazing fish over the past couple years, dang near makes me wanna give the hobby up

Keep at it. Slow and steady wins.

One thing I can say that may help is that when I truly understood what this picture shows salt water aquariums got easier for me. This pic brings fond memories, I caught a 6 inch snowflake eel about 50ft out and a bit to the right of the pic. It was so funny I had a my slurp gun and my friend and I managed to catch him, but he was too smart for us and slithered out of our tied bag.

That’s awesome man, ya those eels are sneaky, lost a couple escaping from a tank, I think I’ll always have a heart for it. I always have.. just never could start the hobby till a couple years ago and man it’s been an emotional roller coaster. Lost this guy last year, Transferred him to my 75 gallon, woke up one day and he had jumped out, tried to bring him back but...

I lost a firefish that I had for quite a while and a watchman goby to jumping. I totally feel your pain.
