40 gallon quarantine tank suggestions?

Ok so as you know I have a 180 gallon tank that we are working on still not up and running but being as Petco and Petsmart have these sales on tanks I really wanted to jump on a few tanks. I was thinking to use the tanks for my fish until the 180 is up and running which shouldn't be long. Any ideas on how to start? I might even buy another 40 breeder for a mini reef would love to hear your thoughts

I'd get the usual hospital tank supplies:

Amonia badge
Thermometer
power head
Some kind of filter HOB/Sponge filter
PVC pipe for hiding places.


How long before the 180 is up?

Well it won't have water in it for 2 weeks which it will still need to cycle. I was thinking about setting up the mini reef first because I wanted to have some live rock in the tank when the big tank starts running I will put the liverock in the refugium. I don't have fish yet so I am willing to wait for the hospital tank to cycle hence the reason for the live rock/sand. What size tank would be good for a sump/refugium on the 40 breeder? 10 or 20? Again there will be 2 - 40g one of which will be a quarantine tank in the end.

I'd get at least a 20 long for a sump/fuge if you're planning to build it yourself. I'd plan my sump size around the equipment you plan to use in it and things like that. A 40B would give more elbow room and more space for a fuge than a 20L. Things like skimmer size will effect how much space you have left for a fuge. I'd go as big as you can on the sump for that reason. Some people actually have sumps larger than the display but there are reasons behind that... multiple tanks sharing the sump, or to add to water volume for better stability and so on. I'd plan things out completely before purchasing and not try to get into a rush. Less headache later. I will say a 40 breeder is a nice foot print for a nano reef though. Personally I'd probably go with another 40 for the sump so I could have plenty of room for a fuge, skimmer, and a decent size spot for the return, and any baffles you use. You might even decide you want to have a place for a filter sock on the drain. They can come in handy at times. Best thing to do is to figure out exactly how much space you will need for the skimmer, an effective fuge, return section, and so on. This will decide the footprint you will need for the sump and then you can figure out a tank size that will accommodate.

My thought is don't jump the gun. Murphy's Law applies here. Of course, you'll need a quarantine tank running, which has to cycle. The main tank has to cycle; it could be 2 - 3 months before putting fish in the DT. Here's the course of action to take. The Mature Aquarium It was actually 6 months before a fish was introduced to the last aquarium I set up.

I would set up a quarantine tank. It's a great idea. I need to set one up myself. Iche took out three of my fish when I first set up my tank. I am still gun-shy when looking at tangs for my tank.
