Hi
does anyone know some stocking for a 40 gallon breeder that i plan to use as a reef tank to

i will be transfering my one clownfish from my current 15 gallon to the 40 gallon

fish must be safe with coral

and would a flame angel fit one of my favourite fish
and if im right 40 gallons is to small for triggers and tangs

if anyone could help with stocking ideas that would be great

It may be too small for flame angel, but flame angels love to munch on coral. Some are good but they have to be added after all your coral is in your tank.

Also sorry but all tangs and triggers are too big for a 40.

Was the clown you are transferring the bigger of the pair? If so they are likely a female clownfish.

Some suggestions would be possum wrasses, blennies, firefish or some gobies. Those are all reef safe and would be good with your size tank.

Good Luck!

@Reef. is their any visable way to sex a clown the clown use to be in a pair until a year ago

if when in a pair was it the biggest one or smaller one? or maybe they weren’t together too long so the size difference weren’t noticeable, one maybe hadn’t turned female yet?...the more dominant one turns into the female and grows bigger, the smaller one stays as a male, once they turn female they can’t turn back to Male, if you think yours is a female, you can add a small clown that hasn’t turned female yet, if you think yours is Male, add a smaller clown, yours now being the biggest will probably turn female and the new smaller clown will stay as a Male.

is that what happens to lone clowns, they turn female?

Yup. If you do end up getting another clown it needs to be pretty small to be sure that it is a juvenile. If another female ends up in your tank one of those two fish isn't going to survive. Even with a juvenile the female may still bully it more than it can stand. I'd feel comfortable adding an immature clown of the same species but i'd keep a close eye on how the little fish is doing. If the bullying leads to fin nipping/visible damage i'd probably pull the little fish for a bit. Locking jaws is also a no no in my tanks. While they are separated i'd restructure some rock work to change up the real estate a little bit and disrupt their territory. I would also reintroduce the little guy to the main tank in a net breeder box for a few days to let them get used to one another while physically separated.

cool thanks from memory i believe it was the smaller clown so i guess its a male so it would proably be best to add the current clown to the 40 gallon first then wait a few weeks get a breeder next box thing then put the new clown in for a few days So they get use to each other

in case they do start to fight should i keep the 15 gallon up and running so i can separate them into different tanks

As i noted before even if it were the male in the previous pair, being as it has been alone for a year, it has transitioned and is no longer male. As to when to add them to the tank i would add both at the same time. No territories set and a fresh start for both fish.
