Would it be ok for me to put a small yellow tang in a 40g, then as it matures sell it back to the LFS and get a new one? How long does a small yellow tang (2 - 3") take to mature to a size that's too big for the tank? Also, I'm starting a 40g so I'm wondering what kind of fish I can get. Please comment, I really wanna start this up planned and I'm new to the hobby. Thanks! Located in Rochester, NY. Currently have a 20g

Here's my .02 live aquaria reccomends a 100 gallon tank for the tang the reason is it needs a lot of swimming space and live rock to pick at, it migh add stress to the fish in a small tank.

Even if it's just a grow out tank for a few months?

I'm in the same boat as you. I have a 40 breeder and really wanted a tang, I got a baby kole tang but once I put him in my system he just seemed way to big and out of place for it so I took him back and got a dwarf angel. The angel still has the effect of being a centerpiece fish but a lot smaller and he looks happy

If your just growing out the fish and then adding it to a larger tank this should be fine it's just as the fish starts to out grow the tank I believe it would be quite stressful on the fish

What size until it gets moved?

Well that's a tough ? Are you growing him out to move him into a tank with larger fish? Or are you just going to grow him until he's to big for the tank and return him to the Lfs ? I wouldn't buy a fish just to return it later I would buy a fish that is apropriate for the size of tank I have, that's my option. However if your going to move him to a larger tank I would judge it by the size of the fish he will be housed with

Tangs are pretty active and grow quickly. A 40g won't work well for a yellow beyond 1-3 months. If tou want a yellow tang for the bright yellow color, consider a yellow assessor or a yellow coris wrasse instead. If it's for body shape, look at a dwarf angel. And if it's for algae eating, look into a starry blenny, or tuxedo urchin, or hermit crabs.

Thanks everyone! I've always been interested in Yellow Tangs, even before the hobby, but I just can't afford a 120. I have everything for a 40 except the tank so that's the only option for me.
