Can SPS be kept in the bottom of a 24 inch tank under 400w 20K metal halides?

yup lol i have sps in the bottom of my 180 growing like weeds with 3x250mh....sorry have to do it GO YANKEES

Some can. Just not the ones that need the extreme light.

If you don't have one, I'd see if someone in your reef club has a PAR meter. If you're getting around 300 PAR down at the bottom, it should be fine with most SPS.

Dont run halides, but I have to add Go Rangers, its the first time I have been able to say that in years.

I have a 24" deep I run 250's MH, went from 10k with 2 96w actinics, to 14KMH to 20KMH with no actinics, and all is fine, but some corals need more par on the bottom so I can not tell you wattage for what you have but IMHO 250 would be fine, I used run my MH 12hrs then after reading on site forums and saw tanks with only 6-9hrs after they got the growth they wanted all was well, I had a Green Gallaxy that took ovet from a fist size to took over about 1/2 of my tank stinging a bunch SPS's I had to remove it and it incrusted 3 large rocks that had to be femoved to get it out, but I to much rock in there and like the looke better now, still have a few polyps of the Green Gallaxy on my over flow and a piece of rock but it will be a long time before a problem. FYI/ Remember what you wish for!!!!
