I am looking to get my 40B tank started. I have had the tank for a while and can't wait any longer. I want to drill it and it will be my first experience with an external sump.

I was looking at the large E-Shoppes Eclipse overflow on Amazon and I was wondering if anyone had any advise and or experience with it. I know the large is rated for way more than a 40 but I like that there are 2 overflow drains and the ability to run a durso. With a proper gate valve is it possible to run too big of an overflow?

I thought I would run a 20 Long sump but I am open to suggestions. I was also wondering what size return line I need to run?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have the eshopps eclipse small on mine which is rated for 600 gallons per hour. It has two drains and I run mine herbie style. Works great. Dead silent. Regardless of which size you go with I highly recommend the eclipse overflows :) I also run a 3/4 inch single return on mine.

An overflow is only going to drain at the rate of your return for the most part. If there is an issue where your overflow outperformed your return pump and created an uneven system of stops and starts could always just instal ball valves when doing your plumbing.

A 20l should be plenty of space for a sump imo. Would have room for a skimmer, fuge, return pump and socks. Inline or hob reactors, uv, and the such could always be an option. I personally would size tge foot print of everything you want and see if it will fit.

I like 1” plumbing for that size, gives you a little slack if something like a hermit or small snail climbs somewhere or a clump of chetao gets in the line when not home.

Thank you Crabs. What size sump and what return pump are you running?
I have a 20 gallon aqueon proflex 2 sump, and a sicce syncra 3.0 return pump.

Thank you guys for the fast replies. My stand is pretty large and I dont think size will be an issue. I appreciate the info about drain rates it is a little intimidating because a work 24 hr shifts and I cannot check/adjust flow rates all the time. Also good to hear another happy eclipse user.

For anyone who is running the Eclipse how is the waterline? Is there any issue running it with a rimmed aquarium or do I need to modify the rim if i dont want the waterline to be too low?

Would it be a good idea to run 2 smaller pumps vs one large one? I have 2 Eheim Compact 1000s that I could run but I'm not sure that would be enough flow. If not I will be buying a new return or 2.

2 pumps allow redundancy, one fails still have another going. I have had 5 or 6 submersible pumps fail over the last 15 years. Even if you dont run 2 its a good idea to have another ready to attach. I personally find 2 smaller ones better than 1 big one. In my pond everything is run off them. Circulation, filtration, aeration and and inline uv. So is fed by 2 pumps in case one fails. Only one running Doesnt preform like 2 but in the past when running one large 1 failed i lost a lot of fish in short period of time. This is an extreme example, most reefs have at least some aeration thanks to in tank circulation pumps. Just an example why redundancy can save a lot of headaches.

The key to getting the water line right with the eclipse overflows on a rimmed tank is to put the template they give you on the inside of the tank, all the way up. If you put it on the outside your water level is going to be to low.
