Hey R2R! So as some of you read from my lengthy introduction, i purchased a 40 breeder and a 29 gallon from Petco’s dollar per gallon sale. I’ve always loved the size of the 40B and am very excited about this build. It’s going to be a slow process and i will start an actual build thread at a later date. We’re possibly thinking about selling our house so that is going to play a big role as to when the tank will get wet.

So my goals for this tank will be softies and LPS. Most all of the corals i want are common. I do not care about names or paying crazy price tags. I want one side of euphyllias and on the other, a green polyp toadstool. Maybe a few acans, some ricordias and a couple of zoas. I’ve also heard a lot about keeping a clam for a form of filtration and they’re just stunning as well.

The 29 will pretty much just be a fuge. I plan to have some LR and or marinepure blocks with chaeto. For the display as much as BB seems to be lower maintenance, i prefer the look of sand. Only about an inch deep or so. There will be LR in the display as well but only half the height to allow room for coral growth as well as to have room behind the rock work. I’m considering using some type of gyre for flow. They seem to move lots of water and take minimal real-estate in the display.

For fish, I would like to have as many captive bread as possible. It just seems like a healthier and safer option. I had a pair of snowflake clowns when they came out and hated getting rid of them when i tore the tank down, so they’re my number one. My number 2 and reason I’m aiming for a fuge that’s nearly the size of the display is to get a mandarin. A couple other possibilities would be some sort of dottyback, tail spot blenny, royal gramma. None of these are set in stone.

Last thing is lighting. I would like to go LED. I had T5s on my 125. I’ve thought about cutting the fixture down and using it but the cost of bulbs would land me the price range of an SB LED black box.

Well again I’ve made another long post. Lol. I’m open to any suggestions anyone may have.

Thanks

Sounds like you've got it all planned out ;) I've got nothing to add besides the fact that you didn't mention a skimmer. Do you not plan on running one? If not you may wanna invest in a very good refugium specialty light (high in blue and red spectrum) to really grow that chaeto. Good luck with the build :D

Sounds like you have a plan very similar to mine, something so calming about a nice softy LPS mixed tank. Following along!!!

Oh! I forgot something. Let’s talk about overflow options. I have a HOB overflow but have usually drilled my tanks. Anyway of having an external overflow instead of having a large box inside the display?

Well that sounds like a great build thread and I’m looking forward to the pictures!

And welcome to R2R as well!

Whatever you do as long as you go qt everything (corals, fishes, invertebrates) and go slow it will be nice tank! Gl

Well, life has taken a not so happy turn and am getting divorced. I have my own place now and am ready to get this tank up and running. However i will be making some changes to the setup. I don’t want to mess with a sump at the moment until I’m sure i will be somewhere for years, and have actually just considered getting an AIO tank just to be back in the hobby. I’ve considered building an acrylic wall on my 40 and making it some what of an AIO or just running it old school.
