I am looking at starting a reef tank after researching for 3+ years and being hesitant. Anyway, is anyone aware of a tank brand that makes a standard sized 40b tank (or at least very similar to the 36 x 18inch footprint) with low iron glass and rimless? All I ever see are standard black rimmed tanks. And when I find the nicer styled 40g tanks they are always a cube or nonstandard size. I really like the dimensions of the standard 40b, but not the greenish glass and rim. I would be doing a sump and going the DIY route. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, Deep Blue Professional is no longer in business. They offered a 57 rimless with a low iron front panel with a similar footprint to a 40 breeder, just a bit taller at 36x18x20. Aquarium Masters offers essentially the same tank on Amazon, but it is rather expensive. Check your LFS and see if they sell Seapora tanks. They offer the same 57 rimless distributed through LFS channels I believe. Hopefully you can get a better deal than the Aquarium Masters one on Amazon. I got my Deep Blue 57 for $325 from my LFS.

Thanks, I've never heard of seapora or Aquarium Masters before. There aren't really any LFS around to check. I like the idea of building a tank, but I would only feel comfortable building with Acrylic and I'm not a fan of how easy it scratches. I've never seen a well done DIY glass build IMO.

Based on the descriptions of the tanls, I’m fairly certain that Seapora and Aquarium Masters are importing from the exact same tank builder that was making Deep Blue Professional tanks... but unfortunately, they seem to be jacking the retail prices up significantly as well. :(

They look the same to me. Question is, did Deep Blue tanks have better glass than a standard Aqueon or Marinelane tank?

My DB 57 has thick 1/2” glass all around and the front panel is definitely low iron as you can see the light blue hue in the cross section of the glass as compared to the regular float glass that’s on the side and rear panels. As far as I know, Aqueon and Marineland use much thinner regular float glass on their rimmed 40 breeder tanks.

Feel free to check out my build thread...

Good to know. I like the idea of thicker glass. I'm not a fan of pre-drilled reef ready just because I like to do stuff myself.

Yeah, I bought the non Reef ready version and drilled it to install a Modular Marine ghost style overflow... nice and sleek looking.

I checked out your build thread, looks good! Very similar to what I'd do. I like the non intrusive style overflows. 57g might be a bit too big for me (going in an upstairs bedroom) but I have some brand options now.

So, are you happy with the Modular Marine? Any problems with leaking? Quiet? Why did you choose it? Did you purchase a Seapora tank?

As posted above, my tank is a Deep Blue Professional 57 Edge, non reef ready. They are no longer in business unfortunately. Seapora and Aquarium Masters brands sell the Identical tanks as Deep Blue, but at a much less friendly price point. ;)

I am extremely happy with my Modular Marine overflow, though I’m not running it at its full Beananimal potential. Because of space constraints in my sump, a Trigger 26, I’m running it as a Herbie. Either way, I have it tuned to run silently with a 1400 gph Sicce ADV 5.5 on full blast. This is due to the fact that both the internal skim box and the external drain box are at an even height on the Modular Marine set ups, hence no waterfall noise from the water having to fall to far down through the weir teeth. This waterfall noise seems to be a common complaint with other ghost style overflow boxes due to the fact that the external drain box is at a lower height than the internal skim box. If I upgrade to a larger tank sown the road, I will definitely be going with another modular Marine overflow set up.
