I recently setup a 40B, and am trying to figure out what I want to put in the tank. I know I can't have allot of fish because of both the size of the tank, and my limited rock work. It is hard because I like the more mid-water swimmers, like tangs and angels, but they are all too big for a tank this size. It seems like all the nano fish tend to keep to the rocks. There aren't any corals in the tank yet, but it will be a mixed reef. The tank has a canopy, so I am not worried about jumpers. Right now I have a purple dottyback and a blood shrimp.

My proposed list is:

(2) - Firefish

(1) - Royal Gramma

(1) - Flame Angel - Maybe?!?!

(2) - Snowflake Clownfish

(1) - Flasher/Filamented Wrasse - Don't know what kind yet

Do you all think that is too many fish for that small of a tank? Do you see anything wrong with any specific fish for my setup? I know dwarf angels can be hit or miss, but I love love love flame angels! Is there a specific type of wrasse that would do better in a smaller tank like this? You can see the build linked below if you are interested.

I think you should be fine with the amount of fish if added slowly. However, an issue lies in that you already have a purple dottyback in the tank and they cn be quite aggressive in smaller tanks and toward fish added after them. It and the angel should be the last two in the tank.

Flashers and small fairy wrasses will work. As will possum and pink streak wrasses, though these are more shy.
