Need some ideas for stocking.
Currently stocked is:
pair of clowns
yellow watchman
torch frag
acropora frag
a small cuc that will add too

Goal is for a mixed reef (lps, softies, sps) no zoas and for various colorful fish. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Depends on what you like. Lots of options tailspot blennie have lots of personality. Possum wrasse of some sort or Pink streaked wrasse. Firefish, royal gramma, some sort of non shrimp goby like clown and/or Hector's etc...

Flasher and Fairy Wrasse are good choices. I’ve got a Yellow Fin Fairy Wrasse in my 40 breeder that’s fat and happy.

My lfs has a sale on coral this weekend so was planning on picking up some frags I am just not sure which ones I should get to start out. It is very overwhelming walking circles around their frag tank

ah yes I know the feeling what fish/coral to get 1st. your doing good talking about it and coming up with a plan before you go. lots of ppl get in trouble by just popping in and falling in love with X fish or Y coral only to find it out that it has a very bad success rate or to big for thee tank.

so good on you for talking is over with the community.

some suggestions:
use the search tab and check out other ppl 40br to see what they stocked , scape ideas and coral. I use the search button all the time its a great feature!

for corals I would suggest some gorgs IMHO I think they are way over looked in the hobby.
same with some macros algae. they eat up N &P add color and just look dang cool. a few select macros really make the take pop. again that my options tho..

next I also really really like mini-max and rock flower nems. there hardy dont move to much or at all (altho they can I hear ) and come in to amazing colors.

I am also I big fan of softies...i know i know...unless you got the latest named $200+ per inch SPS your not cool. haha but I think softies add alot to the tank they flow... with well the flow there there are some really cool ones out there. to be honest there harder to find than the rare SPS.

for fish I like a wrasse or two in there. a fire fish, a goby. its a smallish tank but you do still have a bit of options.

i'll leave you with one of my all time favorite tanks. its a R2R member @MJC just a perfect example of a mixed reef. its not a 40br but still very worth the watch.

great post thank you for the insight. I love the look torch, hammer and frogspawn in the flow of the tank along with softies. I will be sure to take a look at those corals you mentioned. The video makes me very envious haha

There are not really any no go corals. Well i wouldnt put a sun coral if there is fish [emoji23]
But easier corals
Zoas
Palys
Photosynthetic gregorians, dont spread like other soft corals and not nearly as demanding as NP varieties.

Any euphylia corals.

Most lps as long as your alkalinity is stable.

Some easier sps
Pocilopora
Pavona
Stylophora
Encrusting montis

If buying acroporas buy aquacultured under the type of light you have; leds, mh, etc.

A pistol shrimp to pair with your watchmen might be a good addition. Though i dont know if its guaranteed to be the right species if purchased separately.

Neon gobies are small and colorful. I second the suggestion for flasher or fairy wrasses. Does the tank have a cover, lots of these suggestions are jumpers ...

I have a 40b myself...I have 2 osc clowns, green clown goby, watchman goby with a pistol shrimp, royal gramma, sunk cleaner shrimp and snails/crabs. Looking to add a coral beauty or flame angel, and also add a gold headed sleeper goby.

nice choices. I am looking to get a royal gramma and a flame angel but lfs doesn't have any flame atm :(
