Hi! For my first saltwater tank, I wanted to do a 40 gallon breeder reef, with some simple coral like zoas and toadstools. I have a couple ideas for fish, but have no idea what would be the best for the tank. The fish I had in mind were the royal gramma, firefish, clown goby, and possibly clownfish. Thanks so much!

Welcome to R2R!

The fish you mention should all be ok together in a 40B. To try to avoid territoriality, you might try to add the firefish and the goby first, then the royal gramma, then the clowns.

R2R is a great resource to learn about how to set up your first tank - everything from selecting the right parts, to getting the tank cycled and ready for fish, to help with corals and various problems that come along.

Since this is your first tank, have you checked out this forum? https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/new-to-saltwater-reef-aquariums-post-here.130/

There is a guide to setting up a new tank that may be of interest to you:

Are there any other fish you would recommend/ how many of each above should I get? Thanks again

My 40B has:

2x clowns
Royal gramma
Bangaii cardinal
Orange spot goby
McCoskers Flasher wrasse
Yellow Wrasse

I have been musing adding another fish (tailspot blenny went MIA on me) either a hawkfish, or another blenny. 40B has a lot of possibilities for stocking!

I have just a pair of clowns and a Melanurus Wrasse in my 40B
hows your melanarus doing in your 40 breeder? I have a 40b as well and i have fallen in love with the melanarus wrasse. I just have a bad vibe about it.
