Hi everyone,

I currently have a 40g breeder Lps and softie tank and it is currently running an eshopps psk hob protein skimmer and an aqua clear 110 hob filter.

my tank has been running for about 7 months and all my levels are within an appropriate range. I am curious if I can eliminate my hob filter and only run my protein skimmer for filtration along with weekly 5g water changes which is what I have been doing.

Is this possible? Will it be enough? Any feedback is much appreciated!
Thanks

If you have sand or live rock, and some water movement in your tank, why not remove it. What are you using the HOB for? Carbon, or debris filtering?

Yea I have live sand and dry rock That is now starting to show signs of purple and blue coralline algae.
My HOB has a filter sponge that came with the filter, Chemipure elite, purigen, and some biomax that came with the filter.

I also have a poly filter pad in there as well that I forgot to mention

For what it's worth, I'm running a very similar system and I put the 110 on the side to kind of half butt double as a powerhead

Absolutely! I'd say you might try simply leaving it in place and turning it off. Keep monitoring your parameters and see if that mechanical filtration, the chemipure, and purigen are intergral to your tank's stability. If your parameters look good and you are happy after a couple of weeks, you can absolutely take it offline. If your nutrients start to creep up, or you don't like the amount of yellowing/sediment in your water, you can either choose to keep it running, increase your water change volume/frequency, or rehome some of those products to another part of your setup.

thanks man! I really appreciate your reply! I think I’ll give it a shot! It would be nice to have less things hanging on the tank.

I would keep it on! It helps with your media, it’s water movement, and collects junk.

Another thing you can do, that I just did, is get the fiji cube AIO drop in kit and you can use a filter sick
