I’m going to be upgrading from my 36g bowfront to a 40g breeder Monday. And was wondering if 20lb of salt would work ok in there just really wanting a little to cover the bottom for looks. And would a this filter be to much or would it work great.

Would 40lb be overkill? It’s going to be dry sand not live

You might need to rephrase your comment. Do you really want to put 20lbs of salt in the tank? Assuming you mean sand. 20lb in a 40 breeder will be minimal. I'm sure you'll get what you are looking for.

Not familiar with that filter so cant help you there. Mist common HOB is the aquaclear brand

40lbs should get you a 1-1.5” sand bed. Its how much I put in mine.

As for a filter if you are going to go HOB equipment don’t cheap out. Grab 2 Aquaclear 70s or 110s stuff them with filter floss, and change out the floss every other week or so.

For the price of a filter like that you can just build your own sump!

Try googling sandbed calculators. Just have to input the the dimensions of tank and what depth of a sandbed you want and you'll get roughly how many lbs of sand.

Depending on what you put into the filtration, a HOB filter may not even be needed.

IMO if it was me I would just go for a good quality HOB skimmer and ditch the filter.

Best would be to drill the tank and use a sump so you can hide all your equipment.

I run an Aquaclear 70 with a Reef Octopus hob 1000 skimmer on my 40 breeder and I have no complaints. I also have 40 pounds of sand and rock as well. I have 2 clownfish, a clean up crew, and 21 different corals as well that are all doing great with noticeable growth in the 3 months the tank has been cycled. Hope this helps!

I know a lot of people use a HOB filter with success but if you have the funds look into a Fiji cube overflow and drill the tank. This way you can run a sump which is ideal. Drilling the 40 gallon is super easy and the Fiji comes with everything you need to install on your tank.
