Gonna build a sump for my 40g breeder what size tank should I use and how should I set it up, my other tank doesn’t have a sump so I’m not sure how to use one

i used a dollar a gallon 20 long from Petco and a Fiji Cube baffle kit...$125 on amazon

Agree that a 20 long is a good size.

Also, I don’t have baffles in my sump. I just leave it open. It give me lots of flexibility with adding and removing things. I’ve been doing that for over 20 years.

I used a 20 tall as my sump for 40 breeder, it left enough space for an ATO reservoir in the cabinet. I did not use baffles, it would have been too tight for me.

Can I see some pics of the setup and what do you use for return pump and skimmer

This is mine, I am still working on my wire management problem. The skimmer is bubble magus curve 5, the pump is sicce sdc 6 (which is overkill, but there were no smaller models available, and I didnt want to place an order and wait)

How does the skimmer perform is it good? And since your pump is a little over kill what gph do you recommend for a pump

Many people use baffle kits with some size tank. I think a 20 gallon long is a good recommendation.

I know many people set up baffles in their sumps to direct flow to different chambers with different functions. But you don't have to do it this way.

You can set up a 20 long without any baffles. Just install your equipment in the sump and be done with it.

Personally, I am for using a baffle system.

skimmer's and old Coralife 65 i bought for $50 used about 15 yrs ago...pump is a Danner Mag 5...I bought a used wet dry back then that came with a Mag 5 and i used that pump continuously since then...last year i bought a new one cause i thought its output might have been dropping but the new one was the same...i'm still using the original to mix my water so its probably been running for 20 years
