I have a 20g that will act as a "quarantine" for a few months while I get ready to set up a 40g. I have 2 clowns right now, what else can I get? I'm looking for fish that can stay in a 20g until they put on some size and are ready to move to a 40g. Any ideas? I also would appreciate some ideas for the 20g as the clowns will stay in the tank and be a mini display for my bedroom.

I personally would not leave fish in a QT tank, but I digress. As far as the 40, it depends on what else you want.. like oral and inverts. If you're going FOWLR then select dwarf angels could work. Mindful of inverts, hawkfish. Other fish like gobies and wrasses would be great additions; again... not all reef safe. You really need to figure out where you want to take the tank long term and start your fish hunting there; or be willing to remove fish later.

Imo you are going to wanna keep the adult size of the fish in mind when stocking and stick with the smaller sized fish like gobies ,clowns ,fire fish , cardnals , ect. As far as the 20 gal you only mentioned clowns in it but what type of clowns maroons are aggressive and you migh have trouble with two of those in a 20 gal with other fish especially if the two are a pair.

They're a pair of small ocellaris clowns. I want this tank to be a small grow out until the 40. It's probably going to be a mixed reef btw
