Just trying for ideas for 40g breeder. Moving my 2 occ. Clowns from my nano and adding a BTA down line. Going to be a reef tank. I know a tang is out of the question even though I really want a blue or yellow.... but thought about a blue chromis, and I'm lost after that

Just looked up. Some fish, staying away from a flame angle or a wrasse but want an active swimmer as my main fish

2 occ. Clowns
3 blue chromis
Maybe an azure damsel

Stay away from the Chromis as they tend to pick each other off over time and many seem to be shipping with disease these days. Damsels are a fish I would avoid as well as they tend to have nasty dispositions. Why are you staying away from a wrasse? There are some smaller ones (ie Flasher) that would be a perfect fit for your tank. It would be a bit of a gamble but you could look at getting a Cherubfish aka Pygmy Angel.

I want to have a mandarin down the road. My gf loves them. So anything that will compete for pods is a no go.

My 40 breeder is currently stocked with: 2 clownfish, tailspot blenny, royal gramma, helfrichi firefish, a red firefish, pajama cardinal, aiptasia eating filefish, and a tangaroa goby. Wouldn't recommend the royal gramma or aiptasia filefish. My royal gramma can be a little aggressive towards the firefish. I tried to stock my tank with fish that have peaceful temperaments according to LiveAquaria.

Flasher wrasses and small fairy wrasses don't compete for pods, though 40g is a little small for a mandy. You will need to supplement pods.

While some damsels are terrors, I have found azure to be a very well behaved damsel.

Midas blenny, a group of zebra or scissortail dartfish, a Meiacanthus species of blenny are a few options.
