40k Lokani

Picked this up from Cherry Corals, deep purple around the very tip, actual tips are getting brighter blue daily now that it is settled in!

It needs to color up and grow but I do think it's a lokani. Here's a picture of my 40K lokani, also from Cherry Corals...

Looks more like Loripes IMO,, Sids looks more like a lokani but its still too small to say for sure. Top one looks like loripes.

I just discover that I do not know the difference between a lokani or loripes or granulosa for that matter. Any clues as to the differences (without numerous paragraphs and descriptors that are undecipherable).

A. loripes is my all time favorite coral and I've lost some beauties!

A. loripes is typically thicker branched and branches are closer together, and more "bumpy." Lokani and Granulosa seem to have more space between their branches and are usually thinner, overall.

I can see where the first pic could be indicative of a loripes actually...

I would strongly question if the second photo is an A. loripes. I believe it's an A. granulosa, just as your third photo.

My favorite A. loripes that I owned. Lost the entire softball sized colony several years ago. This thing was like trying to cut through steel! Hardest coral I've ever cut.

They are very similar and I cant always tell some of them apart but I think loripes has more rounded tips. Lokani tends to table better than loripes do too. You can see how lokani tips are not as rounded, branches are longer with each new branch growing from under the older ones.

loripes and granulosa are hard for me but lokani is pretty different in that there are less corallites and more rounded tips....

IE (unfortunately that monti ended up killing mine)

Also, Lokani new branches are void of polyps on upper surface, I think loripes do that too but the coralites are more pronounced on Loripes. The one called 40k lokani above has more pronounced coralites on surface of new branches

Take it up with Cherry Corals they are the one that named it (my piece came from the same colony as Sid's) I am merely putting the thing in the SPS ID DATABASE under the name it was sold to me as I'm not asking what you think it is or isnt..... it is a named piece I was just trying to help Rev and R2R with filling the database but I will stop since everyone thinks it is a please ID this for me thing.

Nobody's here is trying to disrespect you bro, speaking for myself, I like to know what my corals are, so anytime someone gives me some info on a coral that maybe I didn't know, I apreciate it. I am sure you got it from where you said you did, but it wouldn't be the first time a vendor was wrong on the ID of a coral, ORA hawkins echinata, ORA Phils granulosa are 2 very popular examples. Being this is going to be an sps database, I believe things should be as acurate as we can make them thats all. Sorry if you took it the wrong way, that was not our intention. If it turns out to ba a Loripes, a granulosa, or a Lokani ,that will not take anything away from its beauty.

Totally understand, and I am not trying to disrespect any of you either and I hope it didn't come off that way (but I see how it could have).... but those corals are all still named what you just listed and not what they properly are correct. So while I certainly wouldn't say they are properly named, they are still named what they are named therefore from a proper naming standpoint and for the sake of the database the name regardless would be correct.... right?

Thats all I was trying to do, I and cherry could be wrong. I never saw the mother of this piece and it is just a small frag of a branch that was probably growing sideways then turned upright and glued to a plug so its probably confused which makes it confusing for use to ID the specific Acropora species that it is.... but it is named what it is and Rev wants help filling the database so I figured I'd throw it up others can post theirs and I plan to continue it out with some growth progress as well so eventually we should get a for sure ID on it but either way... it is 40k Lokani lol

Very nice! I see yours and Sids looks to have more blue/ tealish blue... mine the "whiter" parts are actually a brighter blue (that I cannot capture with my LEDs ) Looks like you are running a Radion, right?

Sid what are you running for a light over this piece and about where in the tank?
