4g pico reef - any possible fish ideas??

Current USA 12 inch 2x18 Watt Current USA PowerCompact Dual Satellite Fixture
AquaClear 20 (has 70's impeller cut down. flow is pretty strong but not exactly sure
NO powerhead

Livestock so far:
7lbs live rock
7.5lbs live sand

2 blue hermits
1 red hermit
2 nerite snails
1 Astrea snail

2 feathery mushrooms
unknown zoa colony (save from algae smother out of a friends tank)
GSP frag

Again, still thinking about the Green Banded Goby...

any other suggestions? the tank is pretty small so im not really too sure..

maybe trimma goby or barnacle blenny? Both stay pretty small and perch a lot.

you love those barnacle blennies!! me too but im still debating adding one to my home tank so maybe not in the work one. the trimma is also a good suggestion, i hadnt come across that one yet. im gonna youtube that one for sure!

i love the clown gobies. never had a tank small enough to find them once they were added. perfect size to enjoy them in this one.

i do see em all the time at the LFS and here: Saltwater Aquarium Fish for Marine Aquariums: Red Spotted Goby

lol and yes i do love barnacle blennies. they remind me of muppets. Plus they are docile, eat everything, stay in view without being too active. Very good nano fish.

Adding fish to a Pico tank

Hi, I have a pico tank, and I have purposefully stayed away from fish. As cool as it is, none of the most conmmon small marine fish would be happy in a really small tank, except maybe a Dottyback? These fish are rare in the retail stores and still pretty expensive, most times I have seen them.

The main reason though is that the fish cause a really heavy bio load on such a small tank, and can lead to instability. I mean, maybe if you had HUGE amounts of live rock, and were really dilligent with water changes, but I think a small tank is really cool with just inverts.

Even shrimp and crabs are a sketchy addition, as many 'coral safe' shrimps and crabs will start munching on corals in a small, high density tank.

Just food for thought! My tank is 2 gallons and has been going strong for more than a year. I've only lost one invert so far!

thanks for all the advice so far guys! I dropped in a small damsel for the time being (borrowed from LFS - save from a cube). tank is too small for him, but its better than his cube.

been thinking still about green banded gobies...once one comes into LFS, im gonna swap the fish.

for invert, i wasnt sure... I wanted something but its a small tank and with a fish i didnt want them to fight...

4g too small for shrimp/goby pair right??

pom pom crab. I have one in my 9gallon that i really like, but he gets lost in there he is so tiny. hes not agressive, but if something messes with him it gets a face full of anemone.

Yellow Clown Goby, got one in my 3g, is out and about all the time and I don't worry about him jumping.

hey hey everyone! I just wanted to let you know which direction I went with this little tank in the end. I got a small red angler from a buddy locally. The little guy is awesome! He'll be going into a 9g in a few months (decided to upgrade his tank). When I upgrade his tank I'll post a new thread about it (i have high hopes for the new set up)

Yellow Clown Goby, got one in my 3g, is out and about all the time and I don't worry about him jumping.

I have on in a 20 and it is the funniest fish around ... I call mine Magnet as he is always hugging the front glass of the tank ... and of course perching in anything else in the tank and seems to be immune to the stings of any of the corals he rests himself on.

Yes it is funny indeed how they use those little anemones as a defense mechanism .. and I like them too but have a Lantern Basslet in my tank who would probably decide to have a gourmet meal :-0

Thanks I'm stoked to have him! Im upgrading him to a 9g soon and will keep going up as needed I was planning on keeping him by himself and a decent amount of corals.

Is there actually anything that can be kept safely longterm in a smaller tank? Corals to stay away from? Coral that would be a good fit for his tank?
