Question guys, if you had the opportunity to buy a 5" Black Tang for $849, what would you do? Beautiful fish. Guy offering it to me today only for $849, but after he wants $999. These are super hard to find.

Obviously I gotta get my wife's permission for sure.

Yeah that is what I am debating. It's a local guy that sells stuff. I just bought a freaking Achilles and a Chevron from him. Wish I had known he was getting that in before I bought those. It wouldn't even be a question. I would have been all over that in a heartbeat.

That itself raises a bit of a red flag for me. Why use a sales tactic with a sense of urgency?

Mainly because he knows that it'll sell for the $999. He is just offering it to me at that price since I have been a good client of his. So I have first pick so to speak ;). I have spent a small fortune with him (at least to me).

Fair enough :)

If I was buying a black tang I'd want a small one. They look much nicer when they are small imo. Also given the price point I'd prefer the longest possible life. That being said a small one may not suit your other livestock so if it's big or bust and a fish you want go for it!

On a side note I have yet to see a fully healthy Black Tang not showing some signs of HLLE. Somebody help me shed the stigma!

I don't personally think the black tang is 'worth' $850. I got lucky and picked one up locally for $500 (still a lot for a fish), but it's a total wimp and has ended up in my refugium. No HHLE on mine that I can see; though it did come to me with a raging case of ich.

Ok I might be wrong. Maybe it's just they always look faded or have some type of issue with their color, markings etc.

They do lose that 'jet black' look as they get older; rather like the gem loses some of its appeal as it ages.

Ah ok I see. That makes since because most of the ones I am talking about were older for sure.

Most of my tangs are 4-5 inches now and my poor 1.5-2” Chevron is having a hard time in the tank. He is eating so that is a good sign. I am not gonna rescue him again. He gotta figure it out with the others. If he don’t make it, that’ll be a $200 dollar mistake.
