50g filter on 10 gallon tank

Im trying to recreate a tank I saw on youtube a 10 gallon tank and the guy (inappropriate reefer) used it was either a 50 or 70 gallon filter on the tank that I believe was used to create water flow in the tank as well as clean the tank. Is this possible to just use a bigger filter on a tank to create water flow or are powerheads needed anyways? Not sure if I have it mixed up maybe he was using a powerhead as well, he just didn't mention it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you say 50-70g filter are you talking canister filter? I think I watched a video from King DIY on YouTube taking about canister filters and how they are really not rated for what they advertise on the boxes. I do not use canister filters so it’s hard to say.

welcome. I use a canister on my 75. I also use circulation pumps to move the water.

What filter are you thinking of using?

It's the aqua clear 70 refugium. I checked a later update on the tank and it looks like he's using it for both filtration and flow in the tank.

Okay, thanks. It seems like he didn't need the powerhead for the tank but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to try to use the extra flow.

Corals will show if happy with water flow, good thing is you can add more flow.
