$520 for a single polyp?

These threads pop up daily and the general consensus is the same. Some say buy, some say don't buy. What people do with their money is up to them.

I did a search in the scientific field and sadly there is no species that returns with a tag or name of jawdropper. I see a pretty big list of what is recognized in the genus Acropora such as Acropora abrolhosensis or Acropora verweyi but nowhere did I see an Acropora Jawdropper.

Therefore I can only surmise that you are being taken advantage of...
Reef raft Canada were the ones who originally brought it in. Mike biggar use to sell them as well and they aren’t cheap...

IMO it's not the price, but the size of the frag. It's crazy to be able to even call a single polyp a Frag. I don't even like buying anything under 1" because there is always that chance it never grows. To risk $500 on something that tiny is crazy. Businesses can charge whatever they can get people to pay, but hard to say that this is a good product.

I know. I was being snarky. It is a color morph that may or may not change depending on the lighting of the hobbyist, water chemistry, or a host of other things. This is no different than any other hobby names slapped on a coral then sold at mark up. Boutique corals. Boutique wine based on supply and source of grapes. I get it. I collect wine and when I buy some bottles (one to drink, few to age) my friends and family look at me just like I would at say someone who bought a Jawdropper thing. So not judging anyone although I do wish we, the hobbyist, would say enough is enough and change the way we handle this.

I mean I know what I'm getting when I buy a Ford GT350 Mustang. It isn't going to change color on me nor is it not going to redline at 8,2000 RPM's, right? Yet that bottle of wine I open just may taste like vinegar and that Jawdropper turn brown in my tank!

So I stick with the Car!

I had to get your guys opinion, I’m a super stick head and I’ve been looking for a RR jaw dropper for awhile but when I saw the price start to creep up on this tiny one polyp frag I just couldn’t do it. Anyone else think $520 for a single polyp is ridiculous?

You can also wait a month or two. I hear TSA got two frags to grow out ;)

It is getting more common and into more hands. I would expect it to be in the $500 range before too long. I traded for a piece from one of these big-time vendors that is asking $1000+ and the coral that I traded it for was about $400 real money.

What's funny is (if you've bought from CB, you know) how big that frag plug is. Those plugs are about 3/8" at best! I honestly don't have a problem with them selling such a pinhead frag, it's a free market. But wow, I wouldn't want to be the person who won that auction!

It’s a pretty fantastic looking coral from the colonies I see online, but $520 for that little nub seems red oculi ya (that’s iPhone for ridiculous)

No way! That’s awesome! I will def hold out for you guys just be easy on me when it comes time to price it lol
Gonna let them settle in and we'll make a couple frags. I went ahead and added you to the request list

How much???
Now I know how it gets its' name . . . . . . . . . . .

I guess it’s all relative based on how much you make. I know I would not even think for a minute of spending that much money on that or any coral for that matter, or fish or invert. Maybe someone who makes money like professional sports players, for example, wouldn’t think twice about buying something that expensive.
Moreover, I would be sleeping outside in a tent or a dog house and be seeing the family through a plate glass window.lol
