I am trying to determine which powerhead/s to buy for 525 G2. I was going to go with two vortech 40 (not sure if that would even be enough) but I keep reading not so great reviews. Should I be looking at something else? I really liked the no chord situation but as I get back into the hobby I dont want to deal with too many gear related issues. Are Octopulse 4s a good alternative or what would you do?

You're always going to be dealing with cords to some extent - whether they're sticking a few inches into the tank or the dryside of a Vortech wavemaker. I would go with a pair of Red Sea ReefWave25s as they will just work with the glass thickness on the 525 G2 (I have a pair of ReefWave45s in my 750). Unlike some other gyres, the Red Sea ones have a 'break' in the cable - which means you can simply disconnect the wavemaker (leaving all your wiring intact) and remove for cleaning (which you may want to let sit overnight).

You can also purchase extra ReefWave25 gyres directly from Red Sea as a "wet side" so you can always have a set running 24/7 in the tank while 1-2 may be out for maintenance/cleaning. They connect via the ReefBeat app and work great.

Thank you very much for the thought out response. I did look into those before and saw that the recommended setup for 525 according to red sea was 2 45 would that be an overkill.

Also did you experience all that connectivity issues people are reporting?

No problem. I have a pair of ReefWave45s in my 750XXL tank and they only run between 20-50% (at peak lighting), so IHMO a pair of 45s will probably be overkill. I would go with a pair of 25s on the sides facing inwards or on either side of the overflow on the back facing forward.

The ReefWave magnets are waterproof so you can actually stick one inside the overflow to mount one under the comb weir if you want.

I haven't had any connectivity issues. I did have two faulty controllers (one out of the box) but Red Sea replaced both within 48 hours under warranty - and I haven't had a single issue since (so almost a year of hassle-free operation).

If powerhead reliability was one of my priorities, I'd look no further than Tunze.
