I ordered 5280 pods and phytoplankton from algaebarn and I was wondering how long they can be outside before I bring them in? They'll probably be outside for a couple hours before I get off work. Will they be ok?

They'll be fine, assuming it isn't hotter than 85-90° out today where you live.

Mine stayed in the box an extra day until my refugium was delivered and they were fine. :)

Perfect. I was worried because it says to bring it in asap on the site

You do want to bring them in as soon as possible of course but we pack them really well so you shouldn't have any issues :-) Please DM us or email [email protected] if you need help with anything or have any questions! :-)

@keithw283 -- Their packaging is actually amazing. You've got nothing to worry about! :)

Yeah obviously I'm not going to leave them outside while I'm at home but I was worried if a few hours would hurt them. It was about 3-4 hours in total and everything seemed fine. The packaging is great and it seems as if I was worried for nothing!

I usually wait until its dark before I add my pods from @AlgaeBarn, and never had an issue. When I say I wait, I mean 2-4 hours after I get home before adding. I do like their Ecopods better though over the 5280 pods. I get 3 jars of the Ecopods shipped every 6 weeks. My Divided Leopard wrasse is getting fat and loving it. ;Hilarious

any specific reason you prefer the ecopods? This was my first order from algaebarn. I always just get stuff from my LFS but this deal was too good to pass up. Maybe if there's a next time I'll check out the ecopods

I found that they are more active and more likely to be eaten by the occupants of my tank. When I add them my Chromis look like Pacman eating them, LOL!!!

completely off topic but how do you like your chromis? I plan on getting some every tank but never have because I find something else I like more. Would you recommend two in a 55g if I'm looking for active swimmers?

You should be just fine but we do have our aoa guarantee if there is any issues! A few hours shouldn't be an issues as we have had packages with several days delay without any issues. Ecopods have 4 different copepod species so it gives you the most diversity of our blends :) 4 different copepods that have different retrodictive cycles, inhabit somewhat different areas of the tanks and have someone different preferences on food.

I will always recommend a few Chromis for any tank, They are very active swimmers. I will also recommend QT'ing them as they are a notorious for Uronema. I would either buy them from @tsmaquatics or QT them yourself. I would go with 3 in your tank. Chromis are Damsel fish, aka aggression, thus the rule of 3. Any aggression will not be 1x1, it will be 1x1x1, thus spreading any aggression until they figure out a pecking order.

I will always recommend @AlgaeBarn. That's why I have a 6 week subscription with them. ;) :)

I will also recommend getting some Phytoplankton as well. It will help the pods you just added to feed. It will also feed any filter feeders in your tank.

I was planning on two chromis when I get back home next week as I am going out of town for the weekend. Will probably take your advice on 3 though. I have a 20 long that I use for a QT tank so they will be going in there. Also, I am pretty sure I overdid it on the phytoplankton as I got the combo pack of 3 oceanmagik and 3 5280 pods.

Put the Phytoplankton in your fridge. It will be fine, just make sure you lightly shake the Phytoplankton daily to keep it from settling on the bottom.

I have 4 Blue/Green Chromis in my 225 gal tank, and I plan on adding 3-4 Blue Atlantic Chromis as well. My Blue/Green Chromis are going on 3 years old, and, I can not see my tank without them.

I QT'ed 4 in a 20 with no issue.

Thank you for the support and for choosing AlgaeBarn!! :)

I was hesitating about buying pods, I now will probably be getting the ecopods.
I had read that you needed a minimum of 6 chromis if you did not want them to kill each other. I bought 9, at least 3 years ago. One was killed by another damsel, on the first day, and another got wounded a few month later. The other 7 are doing very well and are constantly spaying in the tank. The male guards the eggs and do not allow anyone close. I often have 2 "nurseries" one on each side of the tank. Of course no babies ever survive, as I have too many other fish. But it sure put a great deal of animation to watch for.

How cool to hear about the "nurseries" in your tank- makes for free fish and coral food too :p Let us know if you have any questions about our Ecopods!
