Scanning through craigslist and found a 539 gallon tank for 300 but the bottom panel is broken. It also only has 1/2. Buy or dont buy?

i wouldn't buy it unless you knew how or know someone that can fix it... and i think 300 is kind of steep my self but i might just be a cheap skate.

L would get a quote to fix it from a professional and then start the offer at $100 and just explain to him that hey, it’s going to cost me X amount of dollars to repair this. Or so that’s how l would go about this.

Or i was thimking a huge plywood build.
If you went that route I would just go to a glass shop so they could custom cut you a sheet of glass instead of having to work with what you have. who knows that might even be cheaper.

Rebuilding a tank that size is more than I'd be willing to take on. 12mm glass seems mighty thin, particularly if it was on the bottom; and if so, probably why it cracked. Tank looks a little like a glass cages model, though they use thicker glass for something this big. So possibly a DIY - yet another reason to pass.

If your up to removing the panels, which is not easy, I've done it, you can get the panels cut to a different size and build a tank any size you want. 1/2" isn' thick enouh for 500 gallons. 3/4" is. The glass is strong enough at 1/2" but the surface area for silicone is not. That' why 3/4" is better.

Id pay him 100$ that' it. A bottom panel at 3/4" is gonna cost like 500$. Plus the work you gotta put into removing every piece of silicone plus residue will be like 30 hours. I would do it but I've got experience and I'd need at least 4 guys if not 6 to carry that beast. I' recommend dismatnelugn that tank where it is because it' way easier to carry the panels. The tanks gonna weigh a lot and it' very awkward and slippery. Good luck
