Putting in a reef for a new client who is having a home built. Initially, the client wanted a tank that was a 10’ tall column (yikes). During the consultation, I made it a priority to talk that client out of even considering such a thing.
We settled on a 540g built into the wall of their living room. What has kind of got me excited from an “artistic” point of view is the dimension: 72”L x 48”H x 36”W.
Initially, I wasn’t too excited about doing such a tall tank, but when I was able to get the client to let me have 36” front-to-back, I began to get a nice little picture in my head.
I’m envisioning the tank having a tremendous amount of negative space, with coral and rock pushed more toward the front, and an ‘open water’ look toward the rear. Sides and back panel of the tank are all dark blue vinyl, and a single low-profile overflow on one end. To get the desired effect, I think I’m going to really have to play with light and structure placement. What am I going to do? No idea. But the tank goes in 2 weeks from now, but the home build won’t be completed until the end of April. Plenty of time to mess with it.
Currently, all I have accomplished is running the plumbing. There was a miscommunication with the GC, and I got a call informing me that they were ready to stock the drywall and whatever I needed to do in regards to plumbing needed to get done in the next 2 days. All plumbing was set to run through a soffit in the lower level, and we arrived to find that everything had already been done and insulation added, so it was a bit of an adventure mounting 150’ of 1.5” flex from the tank to the filter room.
Here’s my partner showing the finished plumbing:
