I was at my lfs earlier and saw they had a 55 gallon with a broken top brace for 10 bucks. They said it wasn't hard to fix just had to order a new top brace on glass cages. If I get the brace from them it's like 15 for the brace and 15 for shipping. Is that the only way to fix it or could I use something like plexi glass for the brace?

Eeek... I would definitely go with the manufactured brace. If you did go DIY with it I'd suggest using glass due to the far better glass/silicone bond you get as opposed to acrylic. I don't recommend that though, mainly because I wouldn't have the guts to do it :)
