Hello, I'm new. :) What filters do you use for a 55 gallon? I was thinking canister?... and what aerator or whatever equipment do you use to move water? Thanks so much!

If you can, look into a sump. Much easier to get things done correctly with a sump.
Canisters DO work, don't get me wrong, but a sump just makes things so much easier
Look at the Eshops or Trigger systems. They are at a good price point and quality products

With a sump, you can do things like a protein skimmer with many more options than you would if using hang on back (HOB) skimmers.
Just one example

This is my current 55 dt with my diy 30 gallon sump. I originally started out with a canister filter but it got to be a pain to deal with. I keep my sump on a small stand behind the main tank because I have the space and also it's alot easier for maintenance.

Lots of aged rock is your best filter. Canisters need constant cleaning and provide little benefit.
I use hydors to circulate waters, jabao wave makers as well.
Make sure you have a skimmer.

I researched this a lot for my 45 gallon, and I found that HOB filters were a better option for me. A sump was not an option, and I’ve heard so many complaints about canisters. A sump is your best option if it’s possible however.

I don't think filter matters just something you can put carbon or chemipure bags in is good enough I just use a penguin350 without the bio wheels and get a decent skimmer I got a reef octopus hob skimmer off Ebay for like 75 bucks and it was pretty much brand new and a couple power heads in the tank
