hey guys and gals. ive been out of the hobby due to a massive crash last jan. I recently re set up my 20 gallon shallow with 20 g fuge for my for my corals.... pics to come. but im looking to do something odd with my 55 I want something unique. ive had eels and enjoyed the snow flake eel. was looking into sting rays but ya know... 55 gallons and all. are there any small sharks that would fit and thrive ? kinda want to go predator on my 55 seeing as my 20g will be reef. I guess my main question is what options do I have for rare and unique fish in a 55 gallon? thanks in advance

I do like that idea... Not much light needed for them right? Hmm. I might fall back on that a bunch of mangroves and stuff... Tropical. I likey. But I'm going to have my 20g for my LPS and softies... Kinda wanted something bigger. But like I said that's a great idea and I'm going to start looking I to tracking them down... Any suppliers you trust for live stock?

Do a columbian or black fin shark, they are cool little "catfish" that swim on the bottom of the tank. They definitely look like predators when you have a small school of them! I have two in one of my reef tanks and they literally look exactly like two mini sharks with the same movements and looks, really cool :) Also you could maybe think about getting a lionfish in your tank if you're brave enough haha

Lion seems out played... I do like them but when it comes to talking to others it's always do you have a Nemo? Or a lion? I will look into the sharks though. Thanks maybe if I can find a red dwarf.... That'd be sweet.

And I do recommend you go back with the snowflake, they definitely are aggressive looking, but I'm sure you know that. Mine decided that he would eat over $100 worth of my fish even though he was fed daily so he was quickly kicked out of the community lol. Some other aggressive fish to think about are triggers, puffers, and even damsels of sorts.

Wait... Arn't those fresh water?
They are brackish, so they can be fresh or saltwater, I have owned both versions and can say that they look much better in salt because of their color and movement. Definitely a great, cheap buy. They will get big though so you may rehouse them in a couple of years.

ok looked into Colombian shark. kinda neat.... they can survive in 1.25 salinity? that's a bit crazy. but im still open to options.... how big do they end up getting?

Ok went to the Lfs today. No Colombian sharks but they had some balas... I've had them back when I was a fresh water guy and I did like em. You think they can adapt to salt slowly? I mean. For 5 bucks it's worth a shot right? As of now my 20g long is filled with fresh water just making sure there's no leaks... I'm thinking of slowly adding salt till I reach 1.o25... I guess I'll keep everyone updated. Should I start a new thread on adapting a bala to salt? Hope he makes it. Plan on picking up two or 3.

dont get the bala sharks, they are only tolerable to like a tbsp of salt lol they were meant for freshwater, some other names for the colombian sharks are iridescent sharks and black fin sharks. Have your lfs order them in for you, although I would only suggest one or two because my 56 gal has two and they seem to be outgrowing the tank already.

Just a heads up... The bala has survived 2 days with the Salinity at 1.ooo! Today he seems pretty active too. Eating and swimming in the current... Planned on taking him to the local petco after looking into thier background... Hate to say but I'm kinda interested in keeping him and seeing how much he can take. Looks happy.

Do what you wish, I honestly want to see what salinity it can take haha, interesting so far tho! Definitely try to have them order in columbians tho

bala sharks? wait what?

If you wanna play around with the FW fish in SW need euryhaline species....

To be honest I'm at a loss as to what to do with my 55gallon. I built a nice butt 20g shallow with killer lights and a 20g sump. That's gunna be a LPS and softies tank. A Mandarin and maybe snowflake clowns seeing as that what's in my 55 right now. Figured since I'm running fresh water to seal test my tank I'd toss the bala in while I add salt and see it as... Pre cycle. And we'll if he lives I'm gunna put him in the 55 alone. I'm just looking for somthing direct with my 55. Lights arn't good enough to go full reef... I mean. It's got a 25o watt halide and a 60w led strip. Sea horses seem cool but also boring. I might fall back on eels and a dwarf lion?predator tank... Ideas as to rare fish in a 55?

blue jaw triggers are cool and they make cool noises when they go for food, i have one and he got big and is a very cool and colorful guy, maybe get some angel fish and take chances with corals or just no corals at all?

Triggers get rather large right? Hmmm I'll look into it. And rather cruel? No. He seems just fine and has a fresh water tank waiting for him once he shows otherwise. As for coral I might toss some in but have a minimalist rockscape. Can't add too much. Might have a zoa mountain. Mushrooms and hammers perhaps... Might just add alot of little guys and have some small schools.
