Good afternoon fellow R2R'ers!

I recently inherited a 55G tank that was DIY'd into a sump, with glass baffles already installed. This is to replace my existing 20G that I had to dismantle the bubble trap on, when I upgraded to a larger skimmer that wouldnt fit.

here's a picture of the old one (with the old skimmer and bubble trap still intact)

I don't like the height of the first two baffle chambers, previous owner had a different setup than me.

Here's a picture of the new one

Design modifications:
  • lower the baffles in the first two chambers, way too deep for a skimmer and will probably have lots of splashing and salt creep if the water level is so high.

Things I would like to add on to the new sump
  • bubble tower (the display tank is one floor up, and there is a lot of momentum/bubbles by the time it gets to the sump!)
  • filter sock holder/chamber
questions....
  • I would rather not have to take out the baffles just to shorten them, although I'm not sure how well I'd be able to cut them and sand the edges with them installed. I've also considered drilling holes in them with a diamond bit... might be less trouble to just take them out and do the job right
  • would anyone else set it up any differently?
other details that might help
  • the sump is being connected to a 45G display and a 20G frag tank.
  • running a mag 9.5 as a return to both tanks, a Vertex IN100 which I am thinking about replacing with something new
  • chaeto growing area
  • Ca/alk dosing lines
  • apex temp probe
  • 150W heater

last bit of post got cut off... just noticed

So I guess my question to everyone: What would you do with it if it was your sump?

Thanks!

okay after reading a little more I realized how easy it was to remove these baffles. took some fishing line to them, and poof! they were out. used a razor blade to cleanup the silicone left over. just need to cut them down to the desired size and get some 'sillycone' ;)
here's a picture of my new "base". I left the bubble trap because I couldnt find anything wrong with it.

now I will have the space to add the things on the list above, as well as set the level correctly for a standard (nonrecirculating) in sump skimmer.
