Ive just ordered a new tank. Currently im on a 40 gallon setup with cannister filters but now its time to go on a bigger and better setup

learned so much about this hobby from these forums

i am not a fan of high tanks hence going for 18” high on the height

questions

1) what size sump is the right size? Whats a good brand for someone who is new to sumps

2) ive got 2 xr30’s (gen 3 and gen 5) would these two be enough for a tank that will be almost 5 feet wide?

3)I've got An mp10 and a mp40 on both ends... would u recommend i use these on the new tanks or add 2 gyre xf350 on both ends instead?

4) Would need a good protein skimmer.. any specific brand?

5) return pump.. toooo many out there.. but which one is the quietest?

will definitely post some pics once the tank delivers.. its 4 weeks away

1. The biggest you can fit. You will never regret having more sump. It only has to be big enough to hold the backflow and equipment you are using, but bigger is better. As for brand, ive not understood the desire for expensive commercial sumps. I would think your 40 would be perfect.

2. depends on what you want to keep. Probably not enough coverneed them?age for full length sps, but might be great for lower light corals or some sps right under the lights.

3. those two mp 40s alone wont likely be enough, maybe you could add the gyres when you need them.

4. tons of good skimmers. I like Reef octopus.

5. I am a fan of askoll block AC pumps such as the fluval sp. Not the quietest but extremely reliable and not too loud. relatively inexpensive as well. I clean mine every 2 or 3 years whether they need it or not and they are bulletproof.

Best of luck with the new build!
