I am wanting to upgrade my tank from my 75 gallon to a 120. Would a 6 bulb ATI fixture be enough light on a standard 120 gallon or would I need to upgrade to a 8 bulb?

It is enough light to grow SPS but I'd say go for the 8 bulb. I have a 24x24x48 120 and with my 6bulb ATI with two Kessil A160's maxed out at 100% added to it I still feel like I could use more light. I'm most likely going to upgrade to the 8bulb dimmable or powermodule. I love the shimmer the Kessil's add but don't like all the extra power outlets used along with cords everywhere.

I am using a 6 bulb fixture on a 90 without issue. You will lose some light near the front of the tank but if you keep the corals that are the most light demanding closer to the middle you should be fine. 8 bulbs gives you more options but I do not feel that it is necessary.

if you decide to sell your ATI 6 bulb fixture ,,please let me know,,looking for a used 48" 6 bulb unit now..thanks and please dont forget me..sorry to derail..

I live right next to world wide corals and called to ask about pricing on the 120 and asked them about the 6 bulb light question. They told me it's plenty of light and that they ran only a 6 bulb ATI on their 500 gallon until last week. I never would of thought it was enough light for a tank that size.

Edit: also I wasn't wanting to upgrade to the 8 bulb unless I had too since I already have a 6 bulb.

I have an 8x54 ATI over my 75g and it is WAY to much light, but still works well.

Wow, I have no idea how you got an 8 bulb on a 75 without hanging over the edges of the tank. I wonder what par values your getting!

I am running them the actinics at 80% and the rest at 60%. I hate having to dim them, but still trying to acclimate them, had the fixture over the tank for about 2 months.

Skip the LED strips. For the extra cost and less wattage than the extra 2 bulbs you'd be loosing out. Also not to mention you can change more colors with T5 than LED strips. GO FOR THE 8 BULB......;)

The price difference between the 6 and 8 bulb isn't too much. For a SPS tank I would go with the 8 bulb to be safe.

I already have the 6 bulb. I was just wondering if it would suffice on a 120

That's what I am currently doing on my 75 but going 6" taller and deeper I wasn't sure it would work.

if you have the extra cash then do 8 bulbs but if you're trying to be on budget the 6 bulbs is still plenty of light to lid your tank. As long as you plan your corals placement accordingly.
