6 ft peninsula tank. Can flow be run from one end only?

If you're setting up a 6ft (or possibly even an 8ft) peninsula tank, can flow be run from the back end of the tank to keep equipment off of the viewing sides of the tank? I'm thinking something like multiple gyre/crossflow pumps on the back wall. Can it be done? Who is doing it? System would be predominantly SPS.

Yes. I'm not personally doing it myself, but I've seen a few videos of fairly large peninsula tanks where they're running their powerheads only at one end of the tank. The example I saw had something like 4 MP60s in a square pattern, with 2 of them pushing and 2 pulling at any given time to create a circular flow.

That's my plan with mine. Tunze Stream 3 pumps are the plan for now. We'll see how it goes

I had a 6 ft and I found that I needed flow on each side. Getting a Powerhead to push 6 ft flow is doable but you will blast the corals that in the first 1-2 feet. So you will have to get creative with placement. Also I am assuming you would have them on the filtration side so you would end up with a “dead” side or pushing the nutrients away from your filtration

I have a RS 650P and so far I am going it. granted my tank will be LPS dom. but I have 2x Gyre 350 vertical on each side of the over flow box . it seems to be working for now but will see once I get more corals in the tank. tank is 8ish months now and really starting to stock it.

Long Aswer:
I have a Waterbox Peninsula 7225 and initial system worked fine with my WAVs in the back.

However, I wanted a specific flow pattern that encouraged circular flow ending with the overflow.

With my WAVs in the back, flow is too chaotic and as I visually tracked particles they didn’t go into the overflow with ease. I also noticed film would stay in one of the corners opposite the overflow. Nothing I did would get rid of it.

I ended up moving a WAV opposite to get the flow I wanted.

I’ve circled where the film would accumulate before this change.

My Peninsula 5526 is a bit shorter at 55” long, but I’ve got no problem getting sufficient flow with 2 vertically mounted IceCap 4K gyres, even with the mesh guards installed. I have them configured for alternating gyre: the upper halves draw from middle of tank and run at 85%, the lower halves run in reverse at 45% to avoid kicking up my Fiji Pink sand. My program runs in 30 second intervals to give the flows plenty of time to reach their full extent and wrap back around, alternating between both uppers, then both lowers, then upper left with lower right, and finally upper right with lower left. The last two modes generate some good turbulence and cross flows under/over my rock work. Most coral positions receive moderate flows in multiple directions, with the exception of the very top, along the back half of the center line, where the flow is primarily towards the back, heading to the pump intakes and overflow. I don’t seem to have any dead spots on my sand.

I would have to say no. I run a 6’ tank (SPS dominated) and I had one MP40 on each side along with one Gyre XF 350 on each side. I found there were too many dead or slow spots near the middle of my tank so I had to add two Nero 5’s on the back wall in the middle. Maby if you run 4 MP60’s like the first post said.. but then your talking about almost 3 grand just for flow?!

I have a 650 Peninsula and I’m running (2) Icecap 4K gyres, 2 Wav’s and MP40QD on one end and the flow is good with no issues. it is SPS dominant tank. I went bare bottom to avoid dunes and sand disturbance with the high flow. That’s a big thing to consider on setup in my opinion.

I run 2 x MP60s same side on my 300 and it produces a nice gyre. I imagine once the corals fill in it will need another at the opposite end, but for now works fine.

Agreed, as long as they are power full enough.

I run mine only from one side… as stated above, it’s not ideal, but it gets the job done and avoids interrupting the multiple viewing angles, one of the main reasons people buy a peninsula

There is always the option to run a closed loop under the tank, just make sure you are a great glass cutter and plumber or u will have a problem.

Easily done. I did it on a 6’ 125g with one tunze 6065 about 4 to 5 inches below the water line and angled upwards. If you have 8’ and want more flow than that go with the 6085. If your tank 18” wide than 1 is probably adequate. If 24’’ wide you probably want two.

My tank still isn't setup. Home reno, work, and Covid halted all tank progress. I talked to Sam Parker (Parker's Reef on YouTube) since he uses the Stream 3 pumps and he said it should work out great. My peninsula (in my build thread) is 72x36x22 and I plan to run 2 of the Stream 3s and 2-3 of the Tunze 6095 pumps for close range stuff.

wow that is alot of pumps on the 650P ( same tank here ) I am thinking about adding a MP40 to each side along with my maxspect gyres.
