Hello, I got a problem I’d really appreciate your help with.

I brought home a six-line wrasse from a lfs I trusted about 2 months ago. I dipped it in paraguard for an hour then put it in DT. I had heard those fish hardly ever get sick. After about 2 weeks I noticed a strange bump on his head and rapid breathing so I removed from DT and put in frag tank after another paraguard dip. The bump went away after the dip and while I observed the fish I used prazipro in DT now twice following directions. The fish in DT seem ok but I read yesterday that prazipro only paralyses flukes and that they can reinfect the fish after a while. So I’m wondering if I should do a wc of 30% for 5 days or if I change the water all at once. The latter is gonna severely handicap my bio filtration but willing to do it if indeed the flukes are still lingering about.

Also, the wrasse is now in hospital tank on 2nd dose of prazi still breathing fast and his stomach looks inflated. What should be my next step in attempting to cure him?

Thank you very much.

Do you have a picture of the fish?

Praziquantel will erradicate flukes if dosed twice with the proper window (5-7 days) between doses.

There is such a thing as prazi resistant flukes, if you have encountered them then it may take further treatment.

Sadly I do not. There is no physical symptoms aside from rapid breathing and inflated stomach. He is still eating thankfully and on his second treatment. I do have a pic of the aquarium glass after first treatment. I changed 100% of water after 3 days and redosed now on day 2. (For DT redosed after 6 days since water is of much bigger volume/quality). There was similar spots on the glass but not nearly as many as in HT. Scary stuff.

The spots did keep moving which scared me a bit They didn’t look dead just having spasms 36 hours in which is why I’m considering 100% wc in DT.

The Prazi will have the same effect on other life forms in your tank. Those are probably not flukes on your glass. Flukes will spasm and fall off of the host and die within 10 hours. Have you done a FW dip to help confirm you are dealing with flukes? Wrasses can carry a host of diseases and not show symptoms and that’s why they are the Typhoid Marys of this hobby.

No I didn’t dare fw dip yet but since I saw a few of my fish seldom scratch their sides on the rocks and one other breathing rapidly I wanted to rule out flukes. The ones in DT seem perfectly fine now but the wrasse is another story. Since I saw a sort of bump on its head I used paraguard first. At least it’s definatly not ich or velvet or it’d be obvious by now....

What’s wrong with him ?? :(

Have you done any treatments other than the Paraguard you spoke of earlier in the post?
Yeah, two rounds of prazipro.

I just learned that santé Canada is removing all fish medication from the market... if I want some more I better hurry till stores run out. The ones near me are already out. The fish is not eating today he’s a goner I bet. He looked worse after 2nd round of prazi. So frustrating not to just be able to go out and get meds I have to order online and it takes time

Prazi can be hard on wrasses and is an appetite suppressant to all fish. I would do a large WC and see if he regains his appetite. Do you have Metronidazole or General Cure on hand?

I’m waiting for an order of metroplex focus and general cure since no store carries it over here anymore.

Well... the poor thing died this morning can’t say I haven’t tried. I think prazipro even if it was administered at exactly The right dose with a syringe is too strong for an already very sick wrasse. I have a question regarding my qt seachem matrix. Would it be safe to follow the same procedures as regenerating purigen to then put it back in my sump? Thanks.
