I have a 55g tank that is only about 13inches wide. I want to have both SPS and LPS. Would a 4 bulb be sufficient enough light? Another concern is the 6 bulb may be bigger than the tank is wide.

If you are talking an ATI Sunpower, a 4 bulb should be fine (60"?). I would probably go with the 6 bulb however as you will be able to put more combinations in it with 3 seperate banks of 2.

Personally I would go with the 4 bulb - I have a 6 bulb over a 90 that is 18" wide - more than enough light! At times I have to almost completely shade some of the LPS. However, if you think you are going to be getting a larger tank and/or don't mind the fixture being a little wider than your tank ..... the 6 does give you more color combination options and 'upgradability'.

I agree with the above posters...4 or a 6. Before I upgraded to my 90g I had a 55 with a 6 bulb fixture. I went with more bulbs because it would allow me to utilize more color combinations...adding actinics while not giving up much par.

I would go with 6 bulbs , my reason behind this .. I'm sure sooner or later you will upgrade to a larger tank.
I went from a 55 to a 75 to a 90 , now i'm at 200 - i lost track of how many light fixtures i had to buy.
